?In research on academic achievement, Steele had African Americans take a standardized verbal test alongside a European American. Some groups are told it is a test of intellectual ability, some are told it does not relate to ability. The African Americans' test performance was impaired when they thought the test reflected intellectual ability. Interestingly enough, Steele has reported that the effect is most noticeable for the best African American students. Follow-up studies have demonstrated the same process at work (stereotype threat) for men/women, Asian men/European male engineering students on math tests, old/young people on memory tests. Stone (1999) had black and white students play miniature golf. When it was said to demonstrate "natural athletic ability" the black students did better; and when it was said to demonstrate "sports intelligence" white students did better.? so what does this tell us? one conclusion would be that stereotypes become accurate as a direct result of the existence of the stereotype do you believe this to be true?

they repeated the experiment with whites/asians on a math test. when they told the groups that the test tested ability, the whites achieved dramatically lower scores then the asians, yet when they were told the test was meaningless and measured nothing, the groups scored about equal. They also did it with young/old on a memory test, and american/canadian on a body odor test j/k seroiously though, the results were consistent when any widely known stereotype was tested. how do you explain it?

Seriously? Most cultures have their generally accepted stereotypes. These are archetypically ground into each individual in a collective society. These archetypes liejust below the conscious suface in wait of a dropped guard or reminder which brings them into conscious thought causing a drop in self esteem and some stresses which results in poor test taking/ physical skill.
