Oyters & Shitakes in Cold Climates???
    #5656738 - 05/21/06 03:24 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

We are living in the Kootenays, near Nelson BC, on the west side of the rockies. The last few winters have been pretty mild, but it can get pretty cold, to around -15 degrees C.
We want ot try and grow some mushroom outdoors, we're thinking of Shitake and Oyster, but not sure if this is really an option in this climate.
Any advice on growing in cold climates (best strains, best trees, best ways to care for them outdoors, etc) would be really appreiated!!
Thanks!!!

Hey foo,

Oysters should grow well outdoors where you live. Outside oysters do best on inoculated buried hardwood logs or stumps. You can also grow them on other substrates outside by burying blocks. I think any strain of Pleurotus ostreatus will grow there, however if you clone a local wild oyster from your area you will probably have better results. Micololo2 lives in a similar climate and has fruited oysters on buried blocks, pleurotus eryngii in trenches .

I'm not sure about the shiitakes.

Check out the rainfall for your area on weatherunderground it looks like it should be a good time to find wild oysters right now if you have had some rain.

hi mates, we've a Lentinus edodes strain (from micololo2) that fruits between 40-70 Fahrenheit. pm us if you're interested..but we send them just if you're able to grow them cause we've just 3 sporeprints of it.

^_^
