The Judgment of Paris
#5655383 - 05/21/06 04:02 AM (17 years, 8 months ago) |
|

You all probably know the story of the golden apple and how Paris had to choose the most beautiful of three goddesses. Each of the three goddesses offered Paris a bribe if he chose them.
The bribes were as follows:
Quote:
Hera offered political power, riches and control of all of Asia, Athena skill in battle, wisdom and the abilities of the greatest warriors, and Aphrodite offered Helen the most beautiful woman in the world and also the wife of Menelaus of Sparta.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_(mythology)
Paris chose Aphrodite. But I am guessing that not everyone agrees with that choice. I guess it comes down to what you want in life.
So if you were in Paris's shoes (or sandals) which would you choose, and why?

I'd chose Aphrodite...fuck all those ego trips and volent neurotic shit, I'd take a beautifull woman to love and be happy with, though if aphrodite screwed with her mind, it would be rape, so I'd just ask aphrodite to guide me to the one that would not mind being mine in the first place.

Poor people are bitter, while rich people are arogant, the ones in the middle are greedy, you can switch between these things with your power, but neither is "better"

Well, I'm of two minds here:
Since Aphrodite WAS (allegedly) the most beautiful, the apple probably should go to her.
But, as far as the bribes go, I'd choose Athena. Not for prowess in battle, but for the wisdom. What good is polemical power without the wisdom to wield it correctly. What good is another man's wife without the wisdom to know how to keep her?

Personally I would choose Athena. If I had such great wisdom and ability to fight, I could get anything I wanted, right?
Also I think the idea of being a super good (ninja!) fighter who is also extremely wise is attractive to me. That would be far more rewarding than the girl of my dreams or power and money.

I fucked up my vote, because I did not thoroughly read the question. I would have taken riches and control of Asia, personally. I thought that it stated that Aphrodite was also the daughter of the king of Sparta, so I figured it was like one of those King Solomon questions, where if you picked her, you would have gained everything, but nevermind.
Anyone who would not wish to be emperor of Asia is a fucking moron.
 Peace.

Ughh... too much leftover pizza for 7:45 a.m.
Does anyone else have problems when they eat something right after they wake up, where their stomach will start aching like hell?
 Peace.

Yes. I normally skip breakfast, though. I'm also rarely hungry in the morning for some reason, even if I have an empty stomach. My digestive organs aren't lubed up for the day at the crack of consciousness.

Exactly, same here. I forced as much of that pizza up in order to feel better faster. Normally, I do not eat in the morning. Cereal even tends to push it, and I fucking love cereal. *ugh*

I took care of that as well.
I'm feeling better now, might pick up this guitar, in fact. I think we are going out for Chinese later today with some friends, so I might as well not try and eat anything anyways.
Back to your reguarily scheduled thread.

Well, honestly, I wouldn't want to be an emperor of anything. I'm content being a commoner. I wouldn't mind being drafted into the National Basketball Assocation though

Skill in Battle and Wisdom.
Warrior skills are valuable only when combined with great wisdom. These are the ones I choose for my tribe. Politics bring corruption and great beauty fades.

the truth is, you don't need a woman for any of those things.
You can get wisdom and skill in battle on your own.
You can build your own political power and riches.
You can imagine a woman far more beautiful and real than any of the whores that walk this planet.

the whole world is a distraction from the true reality within you and me. 'one great big festering neon distraction' is a line from the Tool song "Aenima". The song is basically a prayer for the apocalypse.
by the way, there is a fine line between misogyny and misandry.
often it is difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.
Me, I like to step over lines. Habitually. I'm a habitual line-stepper

I strongly disagree. It is not a choice between hating males or hating females. The "fine line" is only in your perception.
One can choose to perceive humans as individuals, and make decisions based upon the actions of the individual.
Stereotypes are the lazy way to relate to other humans.

The whole world is the true reality. Reality is. Your thoughts, that tree over there, the commercials on television, the petty drama that humans choose to engage in, everything underneath the sun, preferential or not, is true reality.
Making a conscious choice to not let one's emotional well-being become diminished by it is one thing, and so is making decisions and engaging in behavior that will actively change that which one does not prefer about reality.
Choosing, out of pain and suffering, to seperate oneself from reality, to amount it to being a distraction, even if on a subtle, mental level, is detrimental. It doesn't solve any of the problems that one is experiencing, in fact, it takes away your ability to become the solution to them.

I chose Athena for the wisdom and experience, which would probably ensure my success in other fields (politics & women). I would've chosen Helen, if I knew she was more than just the most beautiful woman in the world -- if I knew she was actually a human being (loved ones above all else for me, but no guarantee of love for looks).

I completely agree with icelander on this one (and most of the other people who voted).
Money, power and a beautiful body are really nothing compared to actual wisdom and ability to fight. If you were wise you could use your power in a good way, make the world a better place.
