how long till cakes dry out?
    #5651557 - 05/19/06 09:01 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

i have a quick question for any experienced grower, my cakes have been colonizing for about 4 weeks, and are still not done! I am getting kind of frustrated because i chose Cambodian cubensis so i could have a fast growing mushroom. They first started growing in my attic, but temps. were too high in there, so after like 2 1/2 weeks i put them in the basement, were they are at a steady 82 degrees F. And for a while it seemed like things were really looking up. But now progress has slowed down again. Could this be from the cakes drying out? If so, is there anything i can do? I have 5 cakes and it looks like 3-4 of them are about 3/4 of the way colonized. Does anyone think they will make it to birth? Is there a way to hydrate them while colonizing?

Thank you

I will tell you what I did on one of mine, but in no way would i suggest doing this except for last resort. I made a cake that was probly to dry to start with, so I figured what the hell it is dieing any ways. I boilded some water and sterlized a hypo and put water in it, but keep in mind I only had one small spot of growth so I didnt have to put it anywhere near the growth. I have gotten more growth now but patiencs is very important. Give it some more time before you start messing with it. I also might have messed it up too, just did it a couple of days ago so it might be to early to tell how this will work

Thank you for the great information!! I heard that the inoculation holes were supposed to be left uncovered for better colonization. Is it really better to cover them?

If there is a layer of dry vermiculite, do not cover the holes.

If there is no vermiculite layer, cover holes with micropore tape.
