My idea for my next batches
    #5653161 - 05/20/06 12:17 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I got some PDA agar and about 20 dishes, here is what I want to do for this and to store for long term. All opinions welcome.

1) Multi-spore print -> agar

2) agar -> WBS

3) WBS -> cased in 50/50+

----wait till fruit----

4) Fast growing strong mushroom -> clone on agar

5) agar clone -> LC dex/malt

6) Store in vaculars for long term storage / knock up some more WBS and spawn too hpoo for a bulk grow

I want to make the bulk grow an isolated strand of my choice so I can have a what i hope to be good success, that's my plan feel free to shot me down or say it is good :smile:

Why not just go bulk the first time instead of casing only WBS?

Because my last few grows with tex and Z I have had a few VERY VERY fast ones pop up that were huge, wanted to isolate my favorite in the hopes that many would come up like it.

I do the same. I suggest not just one clone per strain.

Sometimes I find that the best fruits aren't always the best substrains in every field. You're looking for a substrain with fast and vigorous rizomorphic mycelium and large and potent fruits.

So what I do it clone several fruits and do their process side by side and pick the one that exhibits the best characteristics over all.

Other than that I believe you have a good plan.
I agree that fruiting off of WBS is not a good idea, very poor water retention. spawn your first wbs to poo in small trays, or better yet use rye instead of wbs and case the rye.

ok, I think i got it, WBS to poo ( I have like 30lbs of WBS that is why) is what I will do, in small trays.

I plan on taking 4 of the best and doing clones in 4 seperate agar dishes. So of the 4 dishes look for the best rizomorphic growth is what you said?

Thanks for the help :smile:

not just rizomorphic growth, factor in everything.
fruit them all side by side and see them through the whole way.

Whichever one has the best overall package is the winner.
This substrain/clone will be your master culture.

I go through this for all strains and create master cultures for each one.
Agar and LC in vacutainers and in jars.

My only question is while I am waiting for fruiting, should I leave the agar in the frige to stop production? Or is room temp fine till it fruits?

thanks for all the help

anytime you want growth, leave it out.

anytime you want to halt growth, throw it in the fridge.

Personally, once I wedge out a dish, I stick the remainder in the fridge. Now I use dishes that are split into 3 sections, and this makes isolation much more efficient. I'll remove one third and fridge the dish.

You'll want your dishes refrigerated and sealed with para-film of course. Once you find the substrain that is best for you, take the other test subject dishes and just transfer them to wbs and spawn.

The one that you choose will be your master culture. Take the remainder of the dish and transfer it onto several other dishes, switching the type of agar. Once the new dishes begin to grow out, stick them in the fridge, labeled. Leave a small piece to transfer into a liquid culture.

Now you will have however many (I usually go with six) master culture dishes of your substrain that works best in your environment and with your materials. Take your LC and grow it out to about 20% or so and transfer most of it to vacutainers. Red tops. Take the remainder and make a new quart LC. Refrigerate the vacutainers and grow out the new jar to around 20% or so.

End product:
6 petri dishes of agar with master culture.
100 vacutainers of master LC.
1 quart of master LC.
all refrigerated at 40 degrees F.

This may be over-kill for storage, but I have a big fridge just for storage of project stuff. This way you're good to go for a life time.

In addition, I also suggest storing prints just in case things change and you'd like to start over.
I store my prints somewhere totally different. They're just in case.

Just continue to learn and get better. This world needs more mycologists.

yeah, me too.

like it says, I am forever a student, and sometimes pass on my wisdom.

The best way to learn, is to teach.  To teach, one must have a comprehensive understanding of the material, hence one will actually know the material and have had to really learn it.

Even when I've been in this field as long as RogerRabbit and others I will still be a student.  There may be a finite amount to learn about mushroom cultivation, but after that I can expand it on my own and make new text for others to learn from.  There will never be a time when I won't stop learning.

I am also an executive chef, and in the culinary world I will never know everything.  The expanse of knowledge to learn is far beyond most every human being.  I chose that career for that reason, to constantly learn and grow.
I chose this hobby for a similar reason, to constantly learn and grow  :mushroomgrow:.

Good luck to you good sir, I wish you continued growth and prosperity.

Cool.

I don't own a camera. Well I have a 35mm.
Never liked taking pictures.
I'm considering it though.
If I posted grow pictures I would be onslaughted with questions about this and that. Not into that so much.
One of these days, probably after I move back to the states, I will make teks of my procedures and share them.
It's the least I could do for the Shroomery.
