Was hunting today with my hunting crew outski in some old native bush in the Auckland area and was very surprised to find these Morchella esculenta fruiting from a clay bank under a cabbage tree (Cordyline australis).

Are these a bit old to eat? What do they taste like? inski

Isn't it Fall in Auckland? I thought morels were only a Spring mushroom.

One of my books says that they grow on the pumice soil of the volcanic plateau, This is completely different habitat, I was very surprised to find them. inski

Nice finds
That is strange to have them there in fall.. I have no idea about how the mushroom season works in NZ though.

Are the ones that Inski found edible? I read in an identification guide once that "false morels" are quite deadly and could be red or yellow although I'm not too sure about the yellow.

Those are definately edible Morels......why dont I get em under MY Cabbage tree......can usually tell if good by smell....they get rancid smelling pretty quik and awfully bitter along with it but you can cut those sections out as they usually become quite a bit darker
Be sure and thouroughly cook as theyre poisonous if not
