Bottom of jars take forever
    #5650608 - 05/19/06 03:12 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Why do all my WBS jars colonize the sides first then slowly the bottom? Is it because of the all the top weight above the bottom? My incubater gets no hotter than 82 so I dont think it's the heat. I've tried laying them on there side but it doesn't seem to help much.

There are several possibilities one being a slightly higher moisture content because of gravity, lack of adequate gas exchange perhaps? Try cracking the lids loose a little and fipping the jars on their lids. Also are you using any tape the reason I ask is that will stall jars everytime. GL bro

I left tape on my jars and I am incubating right now. Are you saying that the holes in the lids should be left uncovered? Wouldn't that risk contamination?

Not at all if your doing the PFTek if your not then you should have been using micropore tape or Tyvek with selfsealing inoculation sites.

holes in PF (brf/verm) jars should be uncovered, because if you did it right there's a layer of dry verm on top that keeps the contams out.

holes in grain/wbs jars should be covered, but there should also be a filtered opening designed in your lid to allow the gas exhcnage.

in response to the initial poster, you can give your wbs jars a shake to redistribute the myc covered grains around thus giving you more even colonization. that's one of the biggest benefits to using grains.

Will the mycellium develop at a quicker rate once I remove the tape?
