Nope, but I've had to take a couple of accounting classes and a finance class for my business major. You far from graduating/just graduate or what?

I'm just finishing my first year of accounting classes and realizing how amazingly challenging it it. I'm worried about the CPA and wondering if anyone knows any info. What are you studying in business? What school?

SDSU.  Management.  What's your school?

I barely scraped by in my accounting classes.  So you're finishing junior year right about now?...me too.

One more year of pretty much all management upper division classes left.  I actually enjoy these classes and my entire business education (although certain classes like accounting and finance are pretty challenging-I'm not a math guy and trying to follow transactions through accounts can make go crazy).

I've always wondered how people can major in accounting or finance.  I couldn't pass the CPA, could barely pass the intro class

I wasn't going to post, but now I will. I did basic accounting/bookwork at work at age 16 (1-2 yrs from then on) and excelled at highschool accounting, the basics, but still. It all came so easily and made sense. I chose not to go into accounting once I hit college for a few reasons. Most accounting jobs are pretty boring, unless you like playing with numbers all day, and tend to have high-stress factors. This may be a generalization, but from the stories I've heard, accountants are some of the wildest partyers and some are of the lowest people on earth, comparable to lawyers maybe. This only gets worse as you get closer to the top as well. And finally, I would not want to have to go through the agonies and annoyance the CPA exam brings. 3 days of hell to continue something I wouldn't want to do.

If you're serious about accounting, go for it. But beware of many of the people you'll meet and stand by your morals.

A lot of CEO's of large company's are CPAs. Phil Knight, CEO of Nike, and Arthur Blank, cofounder of Home Depot, CPA's. According to the 2002 Jobs Rated Almana, "accountant" was the fifth best job in terms of low stress, high compensation, lots of autonomy, and tremendous high demand.
I am also going to start a second option in finance next year. My long term goal is to become a Chief Financial Officer in a big busines. The accountanting part is the way I am going to sneak in. Companies are always hiring accountant, but not finance graduates.
The majority of people are screwed up and dishonest, so the majority of any field (exceptions for certain careers) are going to be occupied by morons.

sorry, I meant starting off, the first 5-10 years, of your accounting career, low-level, whatever you want to call it. That's where the stress is, unless you do an outstanding job and don't piss anyone off. This is just coming from my old accounting teacher who retired from it because of these problems. Also, he worked with 3-5 different companies, all fairly large, and he said they were all that way...until he got up to the top, then it became moral issues.

Accounting 1 and 2 was a breeze for me.

So whats up with finance? People don't hire in finance?

Finance graduates are hired, but there isn't the same demand as there is for accounting. I'm mostly talking about Public Accountants. Finance is way cooler, but really competitive. If I were strictly Finance I would try to get a job with a hedgefund. Which I still may further down the road.
Anyone a professional day trader around here?

You know, I actually found my Accounting 100 course to be pretty easy. Alot of the things in the course seemed to follow the same formula/steps over and over. Every time I did a question, I'd write down on a seperate peice of paper : When doing Z action, you do X,Y,Z -- then, as I went onto other questions, I'd keep refering back to this list of 'how-tos' that I had been writing up.

Made studying for exams/midterms/tests really easy.
