pressure cooking WBS?
    #5650130 - 05/19/06 12:57 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I am wondering if a pressure cooker is absolutely needed for sterilizing WBS? I have a huge canning cooker but it is not pressurized. I use it for BRF and have only gotten 1 contam out of like 30 jars. Is this the only reason i need a pressure cooker for WBS? thanks in advance.

id say yes, you need a pressure cooker for wbs
the pressure raises the temperature of everything inside the jar to upwards of 250 degrees.
i just dont think it'd be possible to create that kind of temperature for a sustained time in anything not a pressure cooker/autoclave.

why you have so few contams with the brf is that it can be fractionally sterilized using steam baths. with brf cakes, pressure cookers arent exactly required, but they sure do come in handy. ...and then theres grains, you're gonna have to have a pressure cooker. just my humble opinion.

I have seen wbs contam after a PC session of 45 min. It was a single cernal that sprouted rhizomorphic mycelium that grew faster than the PF strain. With rice and things like that I believe they are cleaner, and you can get away with boiling. For grains like wbs and rye you need to soak for 24 hrs. then PC.
Its always worth a try if you cant do anything else but chances are slim.

Yes, chances are very slim.

If you try it make sure its for ATLEAST 90 minutes, the more time the better but they will still probably fail.

you can do fractional sterilization of grams but its not all that effective for more people and its such a pain in the ass. its easyer to work and extra few hours and then buy a PC.
