I've had cakes COVERED in pins it looks like a chia pet. Most will abort, sorry. After all, it is a cake.

he probably says they will all abort because that small of a cake cant provide enough nutrients for the number of pins its formed.
what happens, is that some pins will exert dominance over others, sucking up a finite number of nutrients that the cake has. the cake cant magically produce new, unused nutrients, it can only use whats available to it. thus, the mycelium will exhaust its nutrients before being able to mature all the mushrooms to full potential.
in a completely related but mildly disturbing relationship, its like the parasitic human twin in the womb thats feeding off its conjoined twin.

followup: i read that in another post, but in this post, no, you didnt mention it. whole wheat eh? what kind of colonization time did you look at with that? id imagine its around the same as rye/wbs. the seed grains certainly look almost exactly the same as rye, just a shade lighter (looking at some whole wheat i have laying around =) )

It's not the nutrients that are limited, there's plenty of nutrients in a cake!
It's the water that's limited. You can only get so much water in a cake and keep acceptable proportions for colonization...
...so you double end case or case alltogether = more water available = bigger flushes.

Yup, it is classic B+... you'll get those early volunteers which will grow pretty freekin' big leaving the others in the dust. The others won't necessarily abort, as IME B+ aborts very very few, but they'll be little tiny guys since there's not enough resources to go around. B+ gives really fun 2nd/3rd flushes too for that reason. Since there's fewer pins later you end up with just a couple monsters.
