The thing about Mike Portnoy is that alot of musicians would argue that while he's got tremendous chops, he's just not as musical as alot of other great drummers.  Of course that's a value judgement on feel, texture, style etc..., but I would agree with it.

And as for Brain  :nonono:
Tim Alexander, dude:

Who the fuck is that? :wtf:

Ahh, he drummed for them for four years, back in the late seventies (a long fucking time ago!). Nicko McBrain, of course, is the real Iron Maiden drummer.

He's great, but I have never considered him to be a virtuoso, in the same league as Danny Carey and Neil Peart (whose video was fucking awesome!).

Asgeir Mickelson is a great fucking drummer, from Borknagar, Spiral Architect, etc. I found a video of him playing with Spiral Architect, but it is really low quality, and it doesn't really showcase his abilities at all. Here's a musikk video for Borknagar's Future Reminiscense, at least you can hear him play. I'd love to come acrossed something of him just playing drums, really kicking some fucking ass!

Borknagar - Future Reminiscense

also, an obvious one:

any self respecting music listener has seen this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-Pgh17A31U&search=moby%20dick

i watched this movie compulsively as a child. my parents got a vcr and one of our family's close friends brought over a copy he dubbed off mtv (this was back in 86, and it was commercial free). considering it was one of the only videos we had at the time AND this was by far my favorate band, i watched it soooooooo much and havent seen it in over 15 years and can still tell you which tunes have skits in them and who's skits they are.

aaaaaand:

yeah, cobham is good, and I bet that video doesn't do him justice. I can tell by the way he plays that he is a great drummer, but in that video he wasn't doing anything special.

Moby Dick solo was a classic for its time, you might as well praise Keith Moon as well for what he did with the drums in his era, but I wouldn't say that they are better than even Neal Pert (who I hate as a drummer). Same goes for Ginger Baker.

Here is another great drummer, there is no real good video of him, but here is his website that has shitloads of clips and shows that he can play metal into jazz into funk into calypso.... anything.

ehhh. website?

gotta finish that post, would love to check it

i think most modern (<--- the edit) rock music sucks ass and im pretty much into the old sounds so im only familiar with older rock music, and with that, mostly popular older music.

with that being said, have you ever heard the works of philly joe jones or art blakey? those guys were both out of this world. art blakey, that fuck would hit the heads hard as hell when he was goin off.

seems like most of the modern drumming techniques are directly accredited to jazz drummers. i never heard any 50's rock musicians wild out the way blakey did - please post who did so i can educate myself.

i think i read somewhere that people like ginger baker, mitch mitchell were both jazz drummers before they started rock. john bonham and neil peart were highly influenced by jazz drummers.

hey psilocyberin, why do you hate peart so much? i think anyone who is fascinated with drummers should appreciate the man. highly influencial, technical as fuck (i mean REALLY technical) and definately has the longevity. i saw the rush live @ rio or whatever and he was the only one who was really live and kicking. why the beef? don't wanna be on his jock like everyone else?

sorry, here is the website.

http://people.ucsc.edu/%7Edav19pt5/trippingDragon/masterframeset.htm

Well, it isn't that I hate Peart, it is just that I think he is extremely overrated, as well as being very Tom (pun not intended) heavy. His entire shtick is Prog drum rolls.

When I rate a drummers technical ability, it has nothing to do with how fast they are. Many of the things I notice about the greatest drummers are:
1) they are calm, and you can notice how much emphasis they put on breathing.
2) they know their dynamics very well, and it not only shows in their sound, but as well as how much wrist they use. If a drummer has to use his entire arm to get a loud sound from a snare then they need to practice their chops.
3) How much do they add beyond mere rhythm? drummers like Bozio really put "the eyebrows" on a song. I wish there were better video's of Morgen Augren, because the two on youtube.com are just a tiny fraction of his talent.

That's a bit extreme. Have you heard Hemispheres for instance?
Or how about 2002's Vapor Trails? He fills very little on it and focuses more on groove and subdivision. He works more on stuff like distinct snare accent placement on that album with some really sublime results, unlike back in the day when he was all over everything constantly.

right, which is why i don't entirely dismiss him, but come on, what is Neal Pert best known for? the prog rolls.

The stuff he does that is actual technical ability isn't great on the scale of technical ability, nor was it new.... listen to any jazz drummer and find that one out.

Maybe I have an affinity and bias towards any drummer which has had experience or exposure to eastern rhythms, which most definitely shines throught their work.
