Plastic jars?
    #5647227 - 05/18/06 06:12 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Is it alright to use plastic containers for inoculation and incubation? I'm having a little difficulty finding the right type of wide mouth jars. What would the downsides be? And if it is ok, what would the best type be? (what about tupperware?)

If you can pressure cook it then it will work.

There isn't a reason why it WOULDNT work but I don't know if tupperware is sufficient. Try jam jars!

I would think that as long as your are able to sterilize it properly, and are able to see the mycelial growth easily, then it's okay. The best kind would be some type of heavy-duty plastic, I would think, but I'm not sure. Wide-mouthed glass jars are pretty abundant, I thought, but whatever you can work with.

I just tried it with a plastic jar last week and it seems to work fine. Like he said make sure it's heavy duty plastic and sterilize it like you would a glass jar (pc, or nuke it) and you should be fine. after a week I'm starting to see some white stuff growing. I guess it's a good sign.
