A big waste of time bro.

Correct, but a casing layer really helps with better flushes and pinsets.

That why it's not optional in my book! I put my blood and sweat into this so I will make sure I get the most bang for my buck! I love seeing casings go 7 or 8 rounds!

Best way is to make some, and then find out how much more...and so on.
You could try math; measure the length width and the height (casing layer like 3/4 - 1 inch for the height)...LxWxH = x then convert that number in to cups, http://www.unitcalc.com/calc_vap.php
LOL math?!?!? you can jist get the hell outa her with your fancy smanchy math boi!!!
sry its just funny that the logical easily quantified system is way down on most peoples short list because its big ol scary math!!!

Considering that I am doing my casing in 16qt "sweater" boxes, that is exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks for hitting the nail on the head, hippiechick.

i take my ingredients DRY
50/50 verm/preat + 1 cup crushed Oyster shells.
place into an aluminum baking pan dry, and bake in oven @ 350 for 35 min.
take out of oven, and place into refridgerator with paper towel overtop to cool. (i stack my trays)
once cool.... dump all ingredients out into a white trashbag. get a little bit of air in there and shake the hell out of it to mix (still dry).
remove all air from bag, and place under faucet to hydrate (tap water is ok).
fill to field capacity, then turn whole bag upside down over sink, and squeeze bag gently to allow water to drain. once only a couple of drips are comming out, then (i cut the bag down... snip the tip)
load up gal ziplock bags for later storage. (last months)
my recipe:
7 cups verm 7 cups peat moss 1/2 cup crushed oyster shells
(double recipe for deeper pans)

I'd do things "wet" as with steriling wet is much more efficient than dry.

Yup . I don't get that dry thing , but then again he's not using anything to adjust the initial ph either . Oyster shell sure won't do it.

Sphagnum peat moss is acidic by nature period. (3.5-5.5 roughly)
