Strange... shrooms growing inside substrate.
    #5646031 - 05/18/06 12:04 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Well,
Just harvested another Keepers Creeper strain casing and I had to brake up the entire casing... why? because there were mushrooms growing not only on the sides and underneath but also underneath the casing layer and even inside the substrate... I had to brake up the entire casing to get at them. I felt like I was harvesting sclerotia or something...

What could be the reason for this? Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? There were really big mature mushrooms in there that never saw light but grew completly underneath the casing layer in the middle of the substrate... huh?
any comments/ideas?

After crumbling the whole casing up I decided to incubate it another day or so to get the myc recovered... is that ok?

Strange indeed. Are you positive your container was 100% opaque?

First of all Yes!
Second of all what does an opaque container have to do with shrooms growing in the middle of a 3 inch substrate? Or underneath a casing layer?

How did you even know they were on the inside?

there were many shrooms comming up from the sides (side pinning) even though the casing hadn't really pulled away from the sides so much to allow a lot of light in the cracks... they sort of pushed themselves up somehow. To get at these I already had to brake up a lot and then I kept finding more and more the more I broke up the substrate. Also there were 1 or 2 big caps poking up just above the casing layer that had appeared out of nowwhere... it turned out that they were shrooms that started far down below and had just grown up so far that the cap suddenly became visible... so to harvest all the mushroom material I had to brake up parts of it to get at the base of the mushrooms that were like that... and there I saw that there were more shrooms 'underground', ones that had grown sideways without comming up nor being at the side. So I just ended up having to brake up the entire substrate and kept finding more and more... there I'd say about 40% of the shrooms were actually on top and 60-70% were visible all the rest were underground... even some quite big ones, but many many many small ones.

Was it wrapped with foil?

Because foil can reflect light back up into the substrate, causing the very problem growers are trying to avoid by using it. Just wondered. There's plenty of other pinning triggers besides light, but it is one of the big ones. If you didn't use foil and the container was dark(I prefer black plastic), I have no idea then why fruits would grow invitro in a substrate. It's a mystery..lol

I guess it really is a mystery then...
If I had a digital camera I'd document it if it happened again on the second flush (that will hopefully come even after having to brake up the substrate and all)... but unfortunatly I don't have one.
Oh well mushrooms are just very strange creatures after all I guess

Sorry I know this thread is yrs old but I just had to comment. Maybe the substrate he had was real "airy". This would possibly explain why they where growing inside the substrate. Is it possible to have to "fluffy" of a substrate?
