Mushroom hunting using Google Maps

Many types of fungi form 'fairy rings' which are visible with aerial photography.
Rather than just roaming around a huge field looking for the rings I tend to check google satellite images first to get a rough idea as to where the little guys are hiding
Here we have a picture of a field near me where you can clearly see rings of the tasty Fairy Ring Champignon mushroom (Marasmius oreades)

Anyways, check it out! It's a great way for finding potentially good cattle fields in your area too

That's a different approach, .
It would seem kind of hard though.
They look like little discolored spots.. have you gone out there and confirmed that they were mushrooms?

Not at all, very easy to do.
In this pic you can see the actual size of the field. The tiny little red square is the area I zoomed in on in the original pic I posted. As you can see it would have taken me hours to search that field not knowing where the rings were!

Those "little discolored spots" are pretty big BTW! The one on the far left is around 25ft across!

Yep, went out there the other day and picked thousands of the little buggers from that exact field using a print out from google

Haha that made me laugh
Cool idea, I'm geussing you are using the rings just as an indicator for mushrooms becuase obviously the pics arent real time as someone said. Rereading you actually found the individual rings?
Cool!

The images not being in real time doesn't mean anything
Fairy rings come back year after year, getting larger and larger over time. That large one on the left in the first picture is probably well over 100 years old, many are thousands of years old!
The rings are there year round, they just green up and become more visible near to when the mycelium decides to fruit.
BTW, The satellite images were updated 18th of April 06 so they're only a month out of date not that it matters.

Yes, I found every single ring you see in the first pic I posted

Man, that rocks. Pity in my Maps they're 3 years old AND trees cover any potential spots!

That was a really good idea you came up with Amatoxin. I cant get any satellite pictures to zoom like the ones you have. I think it might be because I'm out in the Boone's ware all we get for our maps is cheap shitty leftover satellite pictures.

According to Google Earth Blog the 18-04-06 update was for most of western Europe only
There's loads of complaints at the bottom of the page from people in the States...
If it works for you thats great! If it doesn't complain to Google

That's a great idea. Unfortunately, Google Earth has pretty low res shots of Macon. I've been scanning some fields around here trying to scope out some places to check. But I'm not exactly sure what to look for. I attached a pic of one place I've scoped out... it looks like there's cows and some hay rolls out in the field. Would this be a good place to hunt?
Also, is there a good way to tell right off the bat if a field is good or bad for hunting once you get there?
Thanks, Jason
