theories on religiosity
    #5645043 - 05/18/06 02:53 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

i attended a religious gathering recently on a co-workers invitation. there was an open discussion for a portion of the meeting and i started to understand the conflict that exists in the minds of many genuinely religious people, that is:

they understand the rationale for the more basic components of the belief system for example- honesty, or devotion to others ect.

but,

they don't totally get why the religion requires specific nomenclature, or why specific rituals have to be enacted, or why other more obscure aspects of their religion exist.

wherever there exists a splotch of uncertainty within a belief system the believer will refer back to the simpler, more digestible components of the religion, and use that as an anchor for their faith.

another observation i made, which is sort of unrelated, is that just about all religions seek world peace, but only through their own organization. it's not logistically possible for seperate organizations with seperate adgendas to negotiate world peace. peace is an ideal that could only exist if everyone agreed on a common lifestyle, but thats not likely to ever completely occur.

we are all capable of behaving in a more compassionate way and this transcends organizations and agendas. its not neccessary for everyone to agree in order to work toward world peace. consider this forum for instance, many people here bitterly dissagree and one could argue that we would never be able to achieve peace. yet if you go to another forum you might find a much greater level of hostility and dissagreement and thus realize that we are capable of working together and we are capable of acting with compassion and intelligence even if we dissagree with eachother.
