ive always wondered why people say to scrape off the verm layer? is it cause of contams? i would think keeping it attached and dunking would offer a nice little "reserve" of water for the cakes. so why do people scrape em off, i usally keep them on, but then again, im only at the start of my thrid grow.

i dump out the loose stuff... whatever is attached is attached, it gets to stay. the verm layer WAS there as a contam barrier afterall, who knows what its collected. i also like to dunk within the jars themselves, so taking out the excess verm gives some room to fill water in. usually put em back on a pile of fresh verm anyway (that's fed water from an eyedropper, as a reserve of moisture exactly like you state), so i guess you're right and that's all a little redundant (but perhaps a little cleaner), either way, just a matter of preference, no biggie either way.

you do have a good point about the dry layer though. it is used as a contam barrier... id say the verm can be beneficial but a more sterile approach would be smarter

meh that dry verm layer turns into one end of the double end casing you should be doing along with rolling in verm and misting that down. however its just easyer to crumble and case at this point. i dont' see why people are scared crumble in a ziplock up to sevveral cakes then toss on a thin layer of verm and toss in the FC. myc wil lcontinue to grow for a few days so it ends up pretty perfect byt the time is stop growing a pins.
