Home Laboratory
    #5643953 - 05/17/06 10:02 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Maybe I'm just being geeky, but this stuff is so awesome to have sitting around the house! It looks great there on a little white table :nerd:

Here's what I just recently bought:

And here's most of what I have now, overall:

It feels rewarding and quite empowering to own that kind of equipment. It's sort of like men who buy lots of nice tools. They may not have an immediate use for them when they buy them, but they know they will eventually need tham, and they like to know that they have nice tools when the need arises.

I don't know exactly what all of this is for yet, but I know I'll eventually use it all, and it will do the job nicely.

If anyone cares to suggest something for my next purchase, please do, I'm all ears.

Ah yes, the Buchner funnel and filtration flask...

Is that a hand-powered vacuum pump? I've never seen anything like that before.

It's insulting how expensive ceramic Buchner funnels are, I'll have to get a plastic one

I was contemplating adding a $40 graham condenser to my purchase, but I figured I shouldn't blow all of my money at once. Besides, that would have knocked my order up into a higher, more expensive shipping price range.

I'll buy it next time, though. I've allready got one of the glass tubes bent for such a setup.

I wonder how much a fractional column costs :strokebeard:

The equipment is to be kept away from prying eyes, of course.

If people are over, it all gets put away in drawers.

No sense in bragging if it can get you in trouble. Too many criminals wind up arrested because they had to brag. I prefer not to take that chance.

A friend or two might see it, but most likely only the ones I've known since elementary school... the ones I smoke with who are unlikely to go running of to the police. And even them I'm not going to go out of my way to show the stuff to. I just might not bother to hide it from them if they're over for a visit.

Now that I think of it, I'll just put the desk with the setup into a closet. That way even when it's set up it's still rather concealed.

volumetric flask, burette & pippette, leibzeig condenser, reflux heater.

I've always wanted to use one of those cylylindrical conical flasks in a reflux heater with a condonser as a vapouriser - and collect the condensation - brocolli flavoured water

A reflux heater is an eventual necessity, but it will probably be a long time before I get to where I'd need one. I don't know off-hand, but I imagine they are pricey.

Instead of a liebig condenser, I'm likely to opt for a graham condenser. It seems to me to be a superior kind of condenser, since it's coiled inside rather than straight.

About the broccoli water... wouldn't a soxhlet extractor do that quite well?

yeah what you gonna cook?

thats not geeky! Either that or i'm a geek too which is likely. I presently beleive that clamps are one of the coolest things in the world. I stole a few of em from uni and i have them next to my bed - they have a million purposes! holding pipes, wine glasses, cords, beer, you name it. A clamp and a beaker makes a very stylsh vapouriser... hehe. All i need now is some more stands and a bunsen burner..

Theres a bar in my town where the entire bottom level is filled with chemistry gear - glasswear i've never imagined. I go there and just wish...

Yet you post pictures of it on the internet for all to see? I'd be very careful man, that's the kind of shit that gets people in trouble.

But anyways, that's a very nice setup.

Looks like a nice little setup. However you might want to splurge and get yourself a nice triple beam, that scale you've got there isn't the greatest.

Aha! Now I remember. That's exactly what I was going to buy next, a magnetic stirrer that's also a hotplate.

Today I tried making a simple still from one of the glass tubes, just for shits and giggles. My puny alcohol lamp isn't very good at bringing a 500mL flask of water to a boil :stoned:

It still looks cool to have a flask set up as a retort, though.

I'm not sure what I'll be using everything for yet, but I do know I'll eventually use all of it.

I'm thinking my first task might be isolating some morphine from opium. That could be fun

Most likely though I'll just be  using the florence flask to dissolve some opium in warm water and then pour it through a nice fine peice of filter paper to clean the junk out of it.

If your looking for new one I found a great place, seems to be the cheapest and at a great quality,

Though that is not a hot plate.

That looks nice

But I'll have to buy used, and I'd prefer one that was also a hotplate. Used is a must, though... Money is a bit tight for me until I'm steadily employed. Although... that should happen within a few weeks.

Hrm, the ideas are brimming

Meh, I'll get there eventually. I may study what I can find over the summer, but O-chem is something I should cover in my second year.

I have a feeling that this chem major is going to take it's toll on my lifespan though, just going over the requirements to transfer to a UC or Cal State university to finish up my BS was very intimidating. Especially considering the calculus I need. I fucking hate calculus. I hate it with a burning passion that many men rarely feel.

nice setup, my separation funnel is so much bigger than yours though! (1 liter)

I bought a distillation setup too, which now I wish I would've bought a Soxhlet extractor or a reflux condensor

and yeah, I don't really know what to do with the stuff either! LOL!

I feel compelled to find things to do with this stuff... it's a bit irksome really. I have the equipment but nothing to do with it.

I bent a glass tube and made a tiny condenser yesterday. Then I distilled some water just for shits and giggles. :tongue2:

*edit*

And here's an image of those shits and giggles

It's also good to use in the coffee and espresso machines you see in the background, it keeps them from getting nasty hard water deposits.  :argh:
