how hot is too hot for incubation?
    #5643936 - 05/17/06 09:57 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

my first jars,(5 days old) are showing growth in every spot that i touched the needle.yea!, but my question is how hot is just way to f**king hot. i dont have the best thermal control. it got over 90 once and i think that was the worst, but im not sure. i just want to know what temp to make sure i stay away from.

106F = thermal death.

its not a hard line and its not immediately. temps in that area for a period of time (anything OVER 106 for say 15+ minutes) is very likely to kill a majority of the mycelium.

anything over 85-86 actually starts to SLOW growth down again, at a much faster rate than going under those temperatures. too much heat can also dry out your jars. if you can't control the temps, the best thing to do is stick with room temp until you figure out a way to get your incubation method in check.

Anything over 90F is really too hot and will promote contams considerably.

contams are not relay an issue for me. i have some idea of what im doing in that department. thanks for the guidline. this morning they were 92, and that was after i cut off some of the heat sourse. for some reason they get hot at light.

lucky you.........
92 is a very bad idea if you are avoiding contams.
like the pros state: over 90 promotes contams and should be avoided.

I incubate at 80-82. works good for me.

cold=slow
hot=dead

Take a look at this - you'll see that as you approach the 90s, you're slowing growth back down to the same rate it would go if it were at room temp. Not to mention the other dangers added (contams, drying) whereas room temp is safer. It makes no sense to even bother heating them unless you can work things out and get the temp down in the low-mid 80s range. Remember the temps in your jars are slightly higher than the ambient air too, the myc throws a little heat off itself as it does its thing.
