cooling question
    #5643521 - 05/17/06 08:20 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

i almost always have trouble with contam. im not to sure why. my sterile techniques are good, i always PC for a full hour. i think i might have figured out my prob though. when im done PCing, i pull the valve on thr PC. the hot air comes rushing out and cool ait in. cool air that caries contams. then i open the sucker up and take the jars out and let them cool for a few hours in a bag before inoculating them. i was thinking that just leaving them in the PC until they com down to room tem and then taking them out would be better so that they aren’t sucking air in. what do you guys think?

Yeah you should wait like 4 hours after you PC them. Especially so the jars don't crack because of temperature change.

Not to mention that when you pop the weight, the material in your jars is at 250F. Since water can't exist in a liquid state above 212F, the only thing that can happen is for the moisture to turn into steam and puke right out of your jars, leaving them dry. Never pop the weight on a pc to release pressure.

no! even though the outside feels cool to the touch, the core is definitely hotter.

Seems like patience is a problem for you. Waiting for the jars to cool completely won't take long compared to waiting for dead spores to germinate. If your jars felt warm to the touch, they were probably too hot for your spores. Oh well, patience can't be taught, it has to be learned. :mushroom2:

they didn’t feel that warm, im pretty sure they’re ok, but who knows. i guess ill have to wait a week or so and we'll see. i incoed'ed a few jars long a go for my first grow and the jars were warmer, much warmer. it worked. i must say i did have beginner’s luck on that grown. ill keep everyone posted on my new jars....

I wait overnite.

I like the jars to almost feel cool or coldish.
no fridge or anything.

just sitting out on the table overnite.

You have to remember spores will start to deteriorate at 122F (50C) so there is a buffer zone but also keep in mind jars that feel warm are most likely over 100F as your body temp is 98.6 and surface temp is roughly 88F plus so a little warm may be alright but it's best not to rush this hobby IMHO. Either way GL

yeah not rushing is always the best way. i usually wait over night, but im always so busy. i just go a new job that keeps me occupied and i commute another 4. 13hr of my 24 hour day is sucked up trying to make damn living. fuck the system!
