Found in MN - think P. semilanceata (need help!)

Found these growing near house in Minneapolis/St. Paul area. I think they're Psilocybe semilanceata (Lib. Caps). Any clues - I relatively new at hunting and thus cautious.
Habitat: found on wood chip/mulch walking trail in wooded area after 3-4 days of lots of rain. Gills: dark brown/black attached/very dense Stem: Thin, hollow, 2-6 inch length, light cream color Caps: .5 - 2 inches diam. conical, smooth dry texture (before picking) No spore print - sorry Bruises brown (def. not blue) Not strong scent found near other varieties as well (including morels)
any info would be amazing - I appreciate it!

BTW - no mushroom species in MN (according to the location pages)?

I'm not sure about Panaeolus, but I can say they are not Psilocybe. The color and conic shape make me think Conocybe.

I thought Conocybe too. I've been seeing lots of little brown Conocybe mushrooms recently. Definitely not something you would want to eat, some of them are extremely poisonous. Also, it is the wrong time of year for liberty caps, and I don't think they grow in Minnesota, though I could be mistaken.

It looks very similar to the panaeolus that grows in CA during the winter. I also saw the wood chip substrate and that made me think panaeolus once again. I can definitely see a resemblance to conocybe.

Definitely lots of pans that look like that. I thought that the one on the left had some bit of gill showing that seemed much more of the conocybe brown than the pan brown.

Ifthis helps - another pic of the above, and two other varieties found in same conditions very near to them are uploaded to my pics. Is there danger in eating any of these? Thanks everyone, you've been a big help!

Happy Trails!

Yes there is danger in eating them! They are unidentified LBMs which might be deadly Conocybes. If you want to know what they are, then take a spore print. I will bet dollars to donuts it comes up rusty brown.

There is complete agreement that they are not liberty caps. And most of us think they are conocybes, which could kill you. If you post the required information for an ID, then we will likely be able to make a more confident ID for you.

You should study up on semilanceata before you go hoping too much. What you have there is far from it. First you want to make sure that the species you seek even occurs in your area (research). Next you want to study the characteristics, conditions, time of year it's found, etc.

Potentially deadly Conocybe......can look very similiar to what your looking for but spore color will distinguish in this case....so good thing maybe you found these first as to what not to mess with and watch out for and very similiar Conocybes occur in same habitat as 'Libs'......practice cutting off stem and laying gills down and see what color it leaves of the the ultra fine powder (spores) on the paper.....longer you leave it ....better the print.....tho Conocybe is usually pretty quik unless just too dried out to spore
Psilocybes will have a DARK CHOCOLATE PURPLE BROWN to almost PURPLE BLACK spore print......'Active' Panaeolus will be BLACK BLACK colored
Deadly Conocybes (yours) are RUSTY to BROWN colored.....as are many other deadly shrooms to watch for.....good luck
EDIT: and great description AND picture of that mushroom by the way!

Thanks for your help - I'll not eat them me thinks! By the way, somebody posted a questiona about MN even having any actives - is this true? I find it hard to believe that NO actives exist here - not to mention I would be pretty dissapointed! How do find out? In the Shroomery pages there are no listings for MN.
Thanks also for the rule of thumb regarding spore prints - I'm gonna check this out for a few varieties I've stumbled upon.
Happy Trails!

I have had a hard time finding info on what grows wild in Minnesota. The FAQ provides no info, and all threads regarding this question have been closed. Anyways, I believe that you can find Panaeolus subbalteatus in MN, and possibly some Gymnopilus species (not so sure). Don’t take my word for it, though. Can anyone verify my claims, or provide any info? I would greatly appreciate it.

The FAQ is obsolete. Supposedly the entire shroomery is switching over to a Wiki format in the near future.
Panaeolus subbalteatus is cosmopolitan, meaning it is found everywhere in the world. Gymnopilus is also a likely candidate anywhere in the US. Look on fallen logs in low lieing areas that stay moist when most places dry out.
