I usually add 1-2 cups shells per 10 cups 50/50 mix.

remember...

oyster shells will not adjust your ph now.
I see them as a long-term buffer.

if your ph is off right now, you'll need to correct with hydrated lime or something.

be careful with hydrated lime, it is quite powerful.

ph of peat is usally slightly acidic.

peat, coir, verm, and all of the stuff we use doesn't have the same ph everywhere.

you can use.... hell just read this...

test your ph level

you want like 7.5

not 6.something.

if you're close with the oyster shells, cool.
if not, you will want to adjust.

maybe use a high alkaline water like odwalla spring water.
it's ph is around 8 or 9.

just a guess.

Yes you'll need to adjust the pH of the 50/50 mix to get optimal results.

If its too confusing, I'd go with the 60/40 verm/coir with some oyster shells mixed in.
