Should I use a top layer for my casings?

Im a happy caser for a while now. And everytime I case I spawn to poo wait for colonization and then cover with a 60/40 verm/coir casing mix. But recently I fruited one without the casings, just the c poo and its got colonies of shrooms EVERYWHERE! So it seems to me you get more if you don't use the casings layer. Am I right/wrong? What's the dealio, I been told to use the casing layer.

Your just not casing properly and/or maintaining your casing properly. Not uncommon.

IME, with a casing, you get a more even pinset and more medium sized mushrooms.
Without a casing, you get fewer bigger mushrooms.
I guess its all about preference.

I'll take pictures as soon as i find my camera. The casing with the top layer is just starting to set pins, and its looking very promising too now.

The casing IS the top layer. Without a casing, it's simply an uncased substrate. You can't have a casing without a casing layer. RR

Casings are a non-nutrient layer of material (peat moss, coconut coir, vermiculite, sand) that is on top of your colonized substrate (crumbled cakes, manure, straw). This layer provides a micro climate between the substrate and the outside world.

Casings are also a technique where one creates basically a tray of any shape or size and adds a casing layer thus a casing.
