Psilocybe mushroom question

Some one had once told me that all Psilocybe mushrooms have a transparent pellicule or transparent skin that can be pealed from there cap. And I do know that alot mushrooms have a pealable skin. So I guise the question is whether the term pellicule is used for the skin that peals from the mushroom or is a pellicule only when the skin is transparent?

A separable gelatinous pellicule is usually transparent. It always is in the case of Psilocybes, at least. I believe Ps. cubensis is the only psilocybe without a pellicule. All of the "brown capped" psilocybes have pellicules.

Not to get too crazy about what a pellicule is. But from what your saying is that a pellicule isn't always transparent, right?

Every time I've seen one it *has* been transparent.

I think that green thing might be the spirit of the forest, from the anime movie "Princess Mononoke". I dont like anime at all, but that was an awesome movie. Gumby is it the tree spirit thing? I remember it had a tall neck like that.

Some of the psilocybes have them, but they are not easy to peel.
I've seen a few species that I could clearly tear the layer off. It was like a removable coating. Others have the layer, but it won't easily peel off.

I ges your supposed to take some tweezers and grab ahold of the outer rim of the cap pulling up. Then if there is any pellicule starting peal of with it then you will know that its possibly psilocybe.

Other genera also have pellicules, but it's an easy field test to distinguish Psilocybe from Psathyrella, both of which drop purple spores.
As eris mentioned, sometimes it can be very difficult to peel a pellicule on a given mushroom.

It is almost like circucision without the knife. Or better yet like a condom. The pellicule will seperate from the top of the cap leaving the mushroom looking much the same as it initially did expect that it will lack the glossy texture.

IT is a mucous membrane that you are looking for. It appears on some Psilocybe mushrooms and others inteh genera do not have it. It is just one of sceveral characteristics in the genus Psilocybe. Other families may also have a sticky pellicle.
Liberty caps is one but they grow in the late summer to the freeze in the fall depending on the weather and where you are located at.
Other characteristics of the genera are easir to identify than a sticky pellicle.
Read the how to identify mushrooms int he Shroomery's Ultimate Shroom Guide listed int eh sticky at the top of the forums page heee int he mushroom hunting section which asks viewers to read it.

Spelling is important in this game.
I had earlier referred to the skin covering the caps of some Psilocybes as a "pellicule" it is in fact spelled "pellicle" .
