OK I'm going to be using WBS I've seen all the teks and I just need a little bit more help. Every tek seems to prepare the jar different ways. 1. jar then lid with 1/4" hole with pol-fill and then the lid ring. 2. jar then tyvek then lid the lid ring with or with out poly-fill. 3. jar then tyvek then lid with 2 holes one 1/4" with poly-fill then lid ring. 4 jar then tyvek then lid ring. Also with almost every jar preparation they seem to use a double layer of coffee filters to go over the jars. Is the coffee filters really needed. Also I know theres a thing called micropore tape. I imagine i need it but how exactly would i use it if the tyvek in under the lid with the lid ring on or what style of jar preparation would i use it with? One other thing when you PC then do you wrap the outside of the lids with anything like with BRF you use aluminum foil? Cuz wouldn't the poly-fill and the tyvek get wet and would be no good? All the help would be appreciated. Thanx

All you really need is an small hole to allow gas exchange from the jars. Anything covering the hole is just to keep contaminant spores out of the jars so they dont get infected. Also, depending on how you inoculate the jars, you also might want another hole for injection. You can fill the exchange hole with anything that isnt going to be able to grow mold or anything like that on it. So you could make a hole and then stick some micropore tape on that OR fill it with some poly fill. Either way works. Then with the injection hole you could just fill that with a little silicone sealant. Thats all you need for the lid. Coffe filters over all of this gives you a double protection by keeping spores out and nowhere near the gas exchange hole. You dont need them but why not use them anyway? Just pc that and its all done.

I recommend lid, tyvek or other filter disk, then metal ring. If you use the above system, keep the holes to 1/16" so that when you shake the jars, the grains don't bounce against the filter material which would get it wet. A dry filter is a must. RR

RogerRabbit: Do you put the tyvek paper over the lid? cuz thats what it sounded like. cuz my very first attempt way back when with popcorn I put the tyvek over the jar and screwed the lid ring on i didn't even use the lid and then used regular scotch tape to tape up the holes from inoculation. but people been telling me to use micropore tape.

A single 1/4" hole drilled center of the lid, stuffed with polyfill. Cover with aluminum foil for PC cycle, and inoculate directly through the foil, and through the hole--bazaam. Remove foil and cover with a coffee filter for incubation run. I'm running 100% success rate with this setup. Ignore the polyfill-wicking-contam drama, I've never seen it happen over the course of many, many LC's or WBS jars.
Pair this with one-piece plastic lids, and you can crank out huge amounts of WBS in quart jars very efficiently.
