Mimosa Hostilis Question
#5638444 - 05/16/06 05:07 PM (17 years, 10 months ago) |

so i recently came into possession of some mimosa hostilis seeds through a trade. three of six seeds germinated.
the seeds
the plant
now my issue is, they are sensitive to the touch.
same plant after being tapped
ive done a search and found other people with this issue but no definite answer on wether or not hostilis can be this way. This is not mimosa pigra or pudica.
one of my mimosa pudica
so anyone else have any experience with a sensitive hostilis?

I'm pretty sure that mimosa hostillis is not sensitive to the touch. It is maybe a different species, since there is one mimosa species that is well know to be sensitive to touch.
Also did you inoculate your plants? They are legumes and require certain bacteria for optimum growth.
They look nice though.

well they look sensitive to touch to me, because in the tapped picture the leaves look folded and in the other they are open, so they are definately touch sensitive..... maybe you dont have the type you think you have..

So.... we can mislabel any kind of seed and just throw it into the free thread? I hope you're not justifying giving someone the wrong seed by saying that it was free.

He was saying that he HIMSELF GOT them from the free seed thread....And that someone else had mislabelled them. NOT that he mislabelled them and sent them as something they were not.

It may be hostilis. I've found that hostilis seedlings will be somewhat sensitive but not as much as a pudica. M pudica will fold up after a light touch while a hostilis will not. A hostilis will fold up if you shake it or handle it roughly. Even some I have outside still fold up a little when the water hose hits it. My pudica folds up if a drop hits it. They are related plants.

One thing that does stick out to me, is the hairy stem on pudica. Does hostilis have all that 'hair' on its stems?
edit in:
well. it looks as though true m. hostilis has no hair.
more of m. hostilis seed:

im growing an identical looking plant from identical looking seeds. im also growing M. pudica, and this aint it.
the plants im growing is also sensitive, but seems to become less so as it gets bigger.
Hostillis is supposed to have a red stem with fewer thorns.
heres a comparison of all relevantr seeds ive had so far:
Mimosa pudica:
Mimosa scabrella
i cant believe its not 'M. hostillis' :
Desmanthus illinoensis:
ive also had some seeds labeled as M. hostillis that were much larger then these above and more bean shaped. unfortunatly i never took any pics and failed to germinate them.

wow thanks for all the interest guys. from what we've compiled its looking like what i have going is not m hostilis but i guess time will tell. my mimosa pudica seeds look just like Vertigo6911's seeds but it seems to me like the plant looks a bit more like mimosa pigra, the "giant" sensitive plant. i've had a lot of up close experience with mimosa pigra during my trips back home to Bolivia. the stems are very red.
all this leads me to believe perhaps people are throwing around m. pigra seeds as m pudica, and i just happen to get true m. pudica seeds instead of m. hostilis. the seeds look similar but real m. hostilis seem to be darker.
welp, we'll get to the bottom of it eventually.

I am growing both Mimosa Hostilis and Pudica. I have noticed that Pudica responds merely to touch but you need to aggresively squeeze the leaves of M. Hostilis to get a reaction, and they don't seem to close all the way, they just lift up a little.
