Pressure Cooker Questions...

I am looking at purchasing this:
http://pressurecooker-outlet.com/mirro22qt.htm
But... on the site, it says: "This item is not recommended for use on Glass, Ceramic or Flat Top Stoves. The diameter of this canner is larger than most burners, and may cause heat to transfer outward and damage the surrounding surface."
My stove is the electric, flat glass top kind, and I'm thinking I might be shit out of luck with the larger cookers. Any advice on how to circumvent this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Its fine. I had a Mirro 22 that I used on my glass top. Never had a prob. Just make sure that the bottom of it is flat and not concave. Thats my problem now, so back to fractional sterilization for me

Many thanks for the eBay links. Now I've got more choices (I know, I know, I should go with the All American), but... I'm still concerned about the disclaimer that comes with the bigger PC's. I was trying to think of something I might be able to buy or use to raise the PC off of the stove's surface, but I don't know how safe that would be.
Thanks again for the links though!

Im telling you, its fine. I did it all the time on mine. If you raise the pc off the surface, it wont come to heat and build enough pressure. Thats the same reason you have to make sure the pc's bottom is flat and not concave. Your not going to hurt anything with the big ones.

That's kinda the reply I was hoping for, FungusMan. I knew someone here was bound to have a glass top electric and had the need to use the larger PC's. Thanks much for clearing that up for me!

Yeah, I definitely plan on hitting up all the thrift/resale shops in my area tommorow (at least 6 in a 20 mile radius) before I go dropping $70 - $90 on something when I can find a similar used one for $20 - $30.

I own a Mirro 22qt. with hundreds of hours under it's belt.
on an electric stove.
never one problem. not one.
well I have to change the gasket sometimes.... but the stove itself is fine. It will darken up under the pot, but you can just clean it right up with a light scrub.

Well, look what I found at the thrift store (had to go to five others before finding it):

I also picked up a HEPA unit for $6, and two coolmists for $2 each. What do you guys think about this PC? Anyone ever used one that has no rubber seal (just metal to metal with the screw-down clamps)? It seems old, but in good condition. Any comments or suggestions?
Oh yeah, the PC was $20, 21qt, and thick/strong as hell!

Another quick question, and something I'm kinda confused about since this one didn't come with any kind of instruction manual.
In the "Correct Pressure Cooker Use" guide in the FAQ, it says:
"# Leave weight off vent port or open petcock. Turn the heat on at a setting from 2/3 to the highest setting until steam flows from the petcock or vent port. You don't want the pressure cooker heat up too fast, since this can cause certain types of jars to break. Adjust the heat so that it takes around 15 minutes for the steam to begin to come out of the vent. The bigger the pressure cooker, and the more filled it is, the higher setting you can use.
# Exhaust steam for 1 minute and then place weight on vent port or close petcock. The PC will pressurize during the next 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of the PC.(the bigger the PC, and the more jars are in it, the longer it will take)."
Now, check out this picture:

Neither of those parts seems like I can really open or close it to allow steam to escape (or at least it didn't come with anything to close a vent). I'm actually pretty confused as to how the setup in the above picture works, so any help is appreciated.

I think the biggest issue is the possibilty of the PC (and everything in it) being too heavy and cracking the glass.
But like someone else mentioned, you can just buy a single burner from a store that has a large housewares selection, like Walmart. But don't support Walmart because they suck arse. =)

Well, I guess we'll see what happens, lol... I did a search and found this same question asked a couple times before (sorry , should've done that first), and each time, someone wrote that they've used the larger PC's on glasstops without a problem. I'm starting right now, so I'll be sure to let you all know if something drastically bad happens
edit: Also, I should add that my stove is larger than average, and my PC only sits a bit under and inch past the heating coils.

Well, to update, I just finished my first PC run. With the glasstop, it seemed a little hard finding the right temperature to keep it at exactly 15 psi, but once found, it was smooth sailing. No problems with anything! Thanks for all your help guys.
