I have tons of hay and alfalpha, can they be used to grow mushrooms like you can with straw?

I'm sure Alfalfa is a legume, Which means

is creates its own Nitrogen, I'm not sure if it will be ok to use.

Alphalpha has too much nitrogen. I never had any success with it used by itself.

Don't know about the hay. Try it out.

to test hay out could I take a small peace of mycelium and then put it under like 3 inches wide 1 inch deep of hay and see if it colonises... in a propell bottle?

In my mind that could work.

People have used hay for years. It's more prone to contamination due to the seed stalks. You can use old weeds, straw, hay, garden waste, marijuanna stalks, etc. Some work better than others. Just dry very well in the sun, then chop up, hydrate and pasteurize.

yea i live in CA and where I'm at there's alot of grassland hills with tons of wild grasses with stalks and seeds etc. you think i could just cut a bunch of those and use. i mean when dried this grass looks just like the straw you buy at the seed n feed, except it doesn't come in bales.

I have always wondered this as well. My dad bales about 20 acres of hay. That would be great if I get it to work.
