i never liked ecstasy nearly as much as LSD, i think if is the new LSD as you were saying, its only for the lack of LSD available in comparison. i think if given the choice, most people would choose LSD.

I think it's much more popular. I also think LSD is more popular now than it was in the 60's. Drug use across the board is far more common, I think.

OMFG absolutely not. Not even CLOSE!!!! yOu could buy LSD from magazines, people were passing it out FOR FREE. You could call and get some dilivered, it wasnt elligal at first so it flooded the "scene". Nothing has even come close to this, especialy not MDMA.

Some drug use has gone down, much actualy. However newer drugs like pain meds, perscriptions in general, drugs that werent known or well known then have gone up. It depends what your looking at.

I disagree, I know many people who use MDMA and give me a crazed 'what the fuck?! you do LSD?!' look when I tell them I use LSD.

MDMA was similar. It started off being legal, and in the hands of psychatrists/etc, then eventually it started to filter down to the street level and was legal. You had people handing out pills like candy for free at parties. Hell, you'd get handed a bunch of pills once you entered the door - they wanted everyone loved up. It took some time before the black market / organized crimes / etc started to get involved.
I dunno, I think MDMA is far more common place now.
Now, this is some data from 2003 - so I wouldnt be supprised if its even higher. But in 2003, 2.2% of the UK population (730,000 people) use MDMA and more then 120million tonnes of MDMA is produced there in a year, and "The National Criminal Intelligence Service estimates 500,000 to two million ecstasy tablets are consumed each week in Britain."
Now, thats statistics for ONE country -- let alone the entire world.
I also think that MDMA has probably had the largest cultural impact since LSD. Not more of an imapct however. Pretty much the entire house music/rave scene spawned from MDMA which spawned a whole subculture around it, and that subculture has also greatly influenced mainstream society also over the years.
So, I think : MDMA is more widly used now than LSD in the 60s, however its had less of a cultural impact than LSD, but its probably been the biggest influence since LSD.

I tried looking for stats but I got lazy. If anyone wants to link God bless. But I think that on a percentage basis recreational drug use is way up from the sixties. Especially if you count the whole decade against the last ten years. The late sixties verses today? I still say today. Drugs were just getting there start back then. Until we get some stats it's all just conjecture.

I have to disagree with this. LSD is a psychedelic. It makes you reinterpret the whole set of sociological cues and values that shapes national policies/ideologies and their ramifications. People turning on with LSD represented a group of people who were becoming cognizant of their role in society (i.e. pawns to be pushed around to suit the interests of industrialized powers, motivated by the life-long identured servitude we call wage labor).
MDMA is primarily a stimulating euphoriant, and the people who take it in clubs are usually ravers looking for a euphoriating experience. I don't see ravers risng as a social force in the modern world, acting out to try to force the government to change its opressive dogmatic stance. To be honest, I have no idea what you mean by, "that subculture has also greatly influenced mainstream society also over the years." Examples?
I'm not refuting its value as a psychiatric tool (or as a recreational drug for that matter), and I don't really know the statistics on current MDMA use vs past acid use, but I think calling it a "new LSD" is an extreme misnomer. I would also contend that it has not impacted culture anywhere near as significantly, largely as a result of its lack of overt psychedelic manifestations. The use pattern simply doesn't lend itself to worldview-shattering revelations the way that our lysergic friend does.

Around where I live people jump on the chance of MDMA. Most of it is either laced with ketamine or methamphetamine though. Pretty much everyone around here who has tried it liked it. I can easily see it eventually gaining momentum like a snowball and blowing up to the degree LSD once was. The only problem I see is that all of the tablets are laced so it wouldn't be the same thing as pure MDMA.
