Texas Hot Spots for Cubes

Witnessed some potentially good fields during a drive on State Highway 6 from Palestine, TX down to Hearne, TX. Have also heard one anecdotal report years ago of some "bad-ass" fields near Brenham, Texas --which is home to the Blue Bell Creamery, and I would assume there are dairy cow pastures nearby. Known hot-spots: Cow pastures in the entire area surrounding Lake Palestine in East Texas. Producing fields are known to exist near the towns of: Chandler Arp White House Berryville/Frankston (highly bluing strains noted, kick-ass visuals!) Enjoy! YourHighness

Fuck yea! Finally some people are giving up some of the locations. Yea dude said just yesterday that there was some bad ass fields near brenham he goes to all the time. f.y.i. lots of fields look like they have good potential in texas because this state is covered in fucking cows. what makes you say it mite have potential?

f.y.i. lots of fields look like they have good potential in texas because this state is covered in fucking cows. what makes you say it mite have potential? Identifying pastures with "potential" simply comes from experience in hunting... Things I look for are pastures with lots of trees, and especially ones with a creek or pond in them. See my other recent post for tips on locating these kinds of fields. You're right, the presence of cows is probably the main indicator that a pasture has potential ! However, cubes grow on *aged* dungpiles, as well as in straw that has covered old dung, so identifying fields that were inhabited by cattle in the previous year is also useful (you hafta use your memory). Seeing a lot of dungpiles that "sit up" is also a good sign. In my experience, cubes grow in firm, tall, aged cow-patties, rarely in the flat, splattery shit squirts that cattle sometimes produce.

Yourhighness is abesolutly right! A good field will have tall clumps of aged cow dung, you won't usually find cubes or any mushrooms for that matter growing from flat hershy squirt piles But it does happen sometimes, like in this pic below, these cubes were growing from fresh cow shit.
Look for fields with low areas were it gets foggy or there might be a pond or stream. Look for lots of tree cover and shady areas. Tall grass is also good for finding cubes in open field with no treeline. Look for old fields, you can tell them by the large clumps of sedge grass in the field. You know, when your driving by a field and theres clumps of grass all over where old dung piles once laid. The older the field the better.

Yeah yeah yeah, I figured you see that pic and say something about it Nah, I have my own theory on that fresh dung pile. After poking around with a stick in that pile o dung I wasn't able to find any traces aged dung, the mushrooms were directly attached to the fresh dung heap. I think that there was a regular cow pattie that was almost completely dead and broken down and had a few strainds of live cube mycelium trying to hold on, then came along a cow who shat on the dying dung pile bringing it back to life and giving fresh nutrient to the dying mycelium. It was kind of a half and half type thing. There was(had to be) aged dung somewhere under that fresh shit, and the mycelium did colonize the fresh shit. It wasn't a simple case of a fruiting dung pile that happened to get shit on. Whatever, I'm stoned and its too early. So hows the fungal scence been so far in Hong Kong, besides the Pans you posted?? What about that Inocybe you mentioned, any pics??? Take care, LK,

Hi LK, Yes mushrooms do appear out of fresh manure and I have on my web-site a series of photographs taken over a 21 day period every three days since the cow shit. I was at this place the day beforwe the manure was there and no shrooms. So I then came back one day later and there they were, a group of Copelandia tropicalis. in fresh manure because the mycellium was growing in the cows stomach from consuming shrooms and grass which had spores deposited on it. This is common although most grow on the decomposed manure of four-legged ruminants. You can view the iamgs of photos taken every third day after the first and the last image on the 21st day of visiting the spot. http://mjshroomer.yage.net/cult1.html Mj Yeah Greatone234, send me an email and I will send you dr. Gartz' address in Germany and if you send the Inocybes to him I am sure he can identfy them for you in a short amount of time. Mj Guzman does not have time. He is over three years behind, including a new species fromThailand from 1999 which he has yet to analyse, also one from this last year and a new Seattle species I discovered here last fall. So I am sending my new specimens to Gartz t0o wrk on. Mjshroomer

(bump)
Due to the recent rains in Eastern and Southern Texas, the season should be extended. Maybe we will get some of that year 'round action that Florida and Lousy-ana seem to enjoy.
Good luck hunting, but watch out for the MAN.
