Epidemic

The Canadian government has sent a statement to our hospitals about the emminent bird flu outbreak. They have said that it will most definatly hit us as early as the fall and that there is nothing we can do about it. There is no vaccination available to us, apparently the governement cannot afford it.
The governments plan is to set hospitals up to quarrentine victims and simply intend on shutting down all major cities when it hits. They are looking for places to make mass graves.
They are likening this to the plague.
They are expecting thousands of Canadians to die. I'm assuming that if this affects us, it also means it affects the states.
We've been talking about this alot reccently in my house and as nutty as it sounds have come up with a plan if there should be an outbreak.
The safest thing to do is to stay inside to avoid infection, so we would need enough supplies to survive in the house possibly without electrcity for 2-4 weeks maybe more, our other thought is the fact that people may begin to riot, once they themselves run out of supplies, therefore we are even considering driving as far north as possible.
Granted, my family is a bit extreme sometimes, and alot of this plan is speculation still, but I think it would be better to have a plan, then not to.

You only have to worry if you are under 10 and above 50ish. When you are younger you can fight off any flu.

emmm... bird flue is for BIRDS as far as i know... the only way to get infected is eating contaminted chicken i think!
although i don't take this thing too lightly i think we should get used to these things because this is probably just the start! there are going to have to be majoure changes in society to avoide these catastrofical situations IMO!
recycling stuff is a must... more sensible farming and livestock managing... propper city planing and creative solutions for energy production...
there are too many things to worry about really and it takes hard core people to really make a change (i only wish i could be as hard core but i'm a fucking brat )

I highly doubt this. Canada is a modern and wealthy first-world country. There are plans on the shelf to deal with stuff like this. Don't worry.

randal you're a little naive to think that... canada is a BIG place and unless they inlist tens of thousends of people RIGHT NOW to deal with this all over the country they're going to have a hard time enforcing the rules and helping farmers cope with this kind of problame...
i hope i'm wrong but...

I wish blissed, but I'm smart enough to know fox is all lies, its actually from a report my friends mom that works at the hospital has.
I'm currently looking online to see if I can find a good link for it, if I can't I'll get the report back from her and post it verbatem.
Its something, I myself am not loosing sleep over, but its something I'd like to be ready for should it happen.
I mean wouldn't you feel like an idiot if people had beat you over the head with the fact that you could prepare yourself for this and live, but you ignored them got it and died?

Apparently it is not the case with this virus. For some reason the strength of the immune system doesn't have as much of a difference as with regular flu viri. Just google the reports of who died from it, a lot of the victims are young adults, over 18 below 40.

As of RIGHT NOW, you can only get bird flu from coming in to direct contact with a diseased bird. The flu has not yet mutated to be passed from person to person. They are ANTICIPATING this happening, and predicting a huge global issue, yes. But the fact of the matter is that the disease has not yet made it possible for this to become a huge deal. There are drugs that work well against the particular H-551 strain that is out there now, I believe it's called Teraflu? Anyways, I wouldn't go panicking yet. When you get the first report of it somehow making its way across the ocean, and mutating to be an airborn disease...then you can worry!

The report I looked at said that the strain of the avian flu that has the ability to transfer from person to person attacks those with the strongest immune systems, therefore not the young or elderly.

"H5N1. A string of numbers and letters that has the World Health Organization deeply concerned.
It's one of 16 varieties of avian influenza or bird flu. So far, it's the only one that's shown any ability to directly pass from one human to another. It has spread from Southeast Asia to China, Russia and now Europe.
American researchers now say the deadly H5N1 form of bird flu has split into two distinct strains, a development that could make it harder to develop vaccines to stop the spread of the disease."

This article is a few months old and not what I was exactly looking for, I may have to wait till I have the report again.

Call me crazy, but that sounds like propaganda. It has not mutated to a person-person transferable virus. And diseases don't target people with the strongest immune systems, that'd be counterproductive. Diseases start with the weak then mutate and are gradually able to attack the strong.

Yeah I just read on Wikipedia that there's no evidence that it has mutated yet. Hopefully that's true!
