premature birth: is it necessary?
    #563784 - 02/26/02 12:25 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hello Everyone,
Should I birth a cake that is 1 month and 3 weeks old, 80% colonized but seems to be stalled? I had to trash two other 8 oz. that stalled (and started to emit a vinegary smell when the lids were loosened). This one is almost completely colonized with no smell. I'd hate to see it go. Thanks in advance for your comments.

1 month and 3 weeks with only 80% colonisation.

2 points.

1. Premature birth will result in contamination, each time, every time.
2. After that amount of time, with stalled growth, I would say you have bacterial contamination. Ditch it.

if you dont have anything else it wont hurt to birth and give it a shot, especially if your casing, the mycellium takes over fast, and you shouldnt throw out the mycellium if its not contaminated, just scrape of the uncolonized substrate and case only the colonized, no chance of contam there... afoaf has done this many times and never has contam... i mean if you have nothing else its worth a shot esp if you dont smell contam
