sterization methods

i was wondering the extent i should go to to sterilize the substrate before i put them in the steamer? doesnt the steamer eliminate all contams. my friend didnt take any mesures to sterilize before he cooked um. he has had myclim growth in all jars but contams show up later in some. he thinks they all might but not sure, growth has stopped on the more mature ones and the mycilm recedes away from the jar where it first started growing, and turns agreyish color. he thinks theres some green on it but small pieces and spread out. if there contaminted is there any chance of recovery? does the mcilim(?) recede from the jars some times? or sis all this contam and he should start over with more sterilization? thanx for any help! todays newbies are tomorows pro's

Yes, thats contamination...

you really need to sterlize...why didnt you just put the stuff even in a oven or something? When they were dry.

Just get a big pot, or a pot that fits some jars, and put a washcloth on the bottom. Fill it up to about an inch deep of water, and then have a nice boil for an hour.
