Is that the same as the fairy ring mushroom? Is it cultivatable?

Yes, the fairy ring mushroom is Marasmius oreades, but there are of course other mushrooms growing in rings. In Bullers "Researches on Fungi", there is an almost 100 year old report of them being cultivated outdoors in a 1:1 mixture of horse and cow manure. I've searched but not found any other cultivation attempts in the literature.

i have a quick newbie question.
I have read about how to cultivate gourmet mushrooms by inoculating the substrate with colonised agar. My question is:
Could i inoculate jars of substrate with a cut piece of a fully colonised cake? This would be handy as i could have a continuous cycle and not have to colonise agar and would also not have to go about cloaning from a fresh mushroom.

Great just PM me your addies guys - ive got heaps.
No real tips on cultivation off the top of my head - i thinj they might like rye grass seed or manure but they just grow in the dirt in heavily lawned areas. Sometimes in rings - taste quite nice - the caps are much nicer.
A cubie print would be ideal fungusman!

hmmm...  Has anyone concidered that this species of mushroom is actually mildly poisonus? If it is consumed with alchohol, or within a few days of drinking, that it can have an adverse effect not-quite-unlike "anti-abuse" drugs? It has a chemical within it that prevents mammals from processing alchohol out of the bloodstream... ???

If your interested in comparing prints from alternate locations, perhaps a swap of "prints" can be arranged? email me at terantula @ mushroomspider.com

Hey Terantula,

Marasmius oreades, an excellent edible, contains some cyanide , though not enough to make you sick.
I do not think it contains anything that effects the bodies ability to metabolize alcohol. I have never
had a problem consuming it with alcohol.

Hey Shirley Knott,

I picked these a couple of hours ago. Check out the mycelium on the two bases. I usually pull the bases off before I put them in the bag, as I pick these, so the mushrooms stay relative clean.

On most M. oreades when you pick them the bases do not have attatched mycelium, maybe some dirt. These were growing in a place where there had been a leaf pile and it had been overgrown with grass. The leaf mulch where the mushrooms were growing was maybe and inch high, this is just a guess, I didn't dig it up to check.  I don't know if the fairy ring mushroom was there before the leaves, they were pretty happy there.

I'm going to push those bases with the mycelium into a large grassy lawn this weekend.

I'm not sure, I'd try grain spawn, I'd also try something with a little less nutrition. Agar to grain to compost and then plant the colonized compost under some grass.

They are extremely easy to grow with a mixture of horse manure and earth.

Marasmius ordeas does not contain the chemicals contained in some coprinus species that effect people after alcohol consumption. I was unaware that it contained cyanide either - any reference for that Falcon?
ive eaten them many times - quite chewy, but one of my favourites.

Hey Bluemeanie,

http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:B4e-...us&ct=clnk&cd=6, also where I first used the word cyanide there is a link to a google search for the terms, marasmius, oreades and cyanide. I think I first saw this mentioned in Mushroom Demystified, don't have the book with me now so I'm not sure it was in there.

I like this mushroom, though it is time consuming picking them.

I love Marasmius oreades, shame they're so damn small though lol

I often hunt for rings of them by using google satellite images. There's a thread I started in the hunting forum on the subject here:  Mushroom hunting using Google Maps

That was funny as hell, ha haa!

I was on my way to the shop to get some beer and spotted a large ring of M. oreades on someones front lawn so I knocked on their door to ask permission to pick them. I could tell by the look on the girls face who answered the door that she thought I was some loon who'd just escaped from the nut house or something lol

As soon as she closed the door I heard her lock it and then she started peering through the curtains at me as I was picking the shrooms.

Probably thought I was some magic mushroom crazed druggy lolzzz  :crazy2:
