Victorian Mushrooms - Id?
    #5635801 - 05/16/06 12:00 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hi, I live in Victoria Australia and found these lately. Any id would be great!

I found these growing in clusters of about five – all ranging from 2- 7 cms. Gills are a gray – very pale violet to dark brown (when dried or bruised) with a spore print that’s silver-gray. It has red heads – the smaller ones are rounded but at 5cms and up they inverse. The texture on the top is almost like a rotten orange peel – with similar color (orange to dark orange). They were all growing near wood chips.

These white – pale yellow mushrooms are 3 – 6 cms with a 2cm bell shaped top and long rubbery stem – a bit like grass. It’s a yellow color – and all the black dots are like – larva or something. The spore print is whitish yellowish. It was growing in moist grass, about four or five.

When I was walking to school I found this one in somebody front yard – about six where growing, all around 8 – 15 cms, low to the ground – which was dirt. It was a intense yellow (not neon or anything) but browned very easily – with brown bruising and it leaked a strange brown liquid (like blood >_<) its spore print is dark brown as well. The skin on top is hard and brown and the inner flesh is a pale brown.

These last ones my family has been eating every mushroom season – it’s a bright orange with orange gills and an orange spore print – the mushrooms grow under pine trees in clusters and are 8 to 15 cms. They are delicious. I assumed perhaps they were saffron milk cups but they don’t ooze milky substance at all soo…

Any ID would be greatful. Thanks.

I live in Melbourne too mate, and the yellow ones you mentioned sound like what the boys call 'golden tops'.
I'm by no means an expert mushy head so PLEASE DO NOT take this as a suggestion to go right ahead and munch'em.
Just a thought. If they are in fact golden tops you'll need a few of them, and the fellas seem to enjoy them most boiled like a tea or watery soup. I'm more a fan of opiates and less into halloosynogenz :P

Good luck mate, and be careful hey?

Wait until a trusted opinion gets on before doing anything...

My guessse:
Could top ones be (inedilble) Stropharia Aurantiaca?
Bottom ones look like Lactarius Deliciosus (do they bruise greenish?)

None are psilocybes, I reckon :sun:

#1 looks like either a Stropharia or Hypholoma. Both are close relatives to psilocybe, but aren't active.

#2 is a Conocybe. Probably poisonous.. always avoid ones that look like that.

#4 certainly looks like a Lactarius. Most Lactarius have a milky latex, which can cause bruising on the gills, cap, and stem. Some even have a blue-green latex.

Id agree - there is definately stropharia aurantiaca in there as well. Its mildly poisonous but is found in similar locations to suaberuginosa.
