Vermiculite layer
    #5634883 - 05/15/06 08:41 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

So on one out of all my jars the top vermiculite layer is wet and covered with what I guess is mycelium, just wondering it it was safe to fruit it since all my other jars have dry vermiculite at the top

If the verm layer is wet, it could be a mold.

You didn't say if the jar was fully colonized or not. If so, sometimes the mycelium crawls up into the verm layer. You'll just have to see if it's mushroom mycelium or mold.

It looks ok. If it smells ok, birth and fruit that baby. You're going to scrape the verm off anyway.

The verm is acting as a casing layer. Cased substrates will almost always fruit better than uncased.

Normally you scrape the verm barrier off, and add fresh casing or DEC. You got lucky.
