ok i'm about to change substrates and use rye seed or grain. but I seen a video in which they just PC the jars and do not soak them for 24hrs. Is it really necessary to soak the rye before you PC? What are the pros & cons against soaking and not soaking and is there a real difference between rye seed or grain?

Soaking is the easiest way to make sure that the grains have enough moisture and not too much.
Soaking for a little over 12 hours always seems like a good idea. Simmering works too but its harder to get just right.
I've never just stuck grains and water in the PC. To me that seems like too much trial and error until I got the right mixture for my grain. Soaking is almost idiot proof. Just let it sit until its not soaking anymore then put in the jars and PC for 60-90 mins and you are done.

Dude, afoaf had much better results simmering than soaking. Endospores are the only reason soaking could be reasonable, but I've never had a problem with them. So I'd highly recommend simmering until you get a few burst kernels. Try boiling a big pot of water, turn off heat, add birdseed or rye grain, then let sit for a while. Only expereience will tell you how to fine tune the times needed for simmering to perfection. Trust me, each brand of birdseed or source of rye seems to need an adjustment in hydration. Practice, practice, practice and you'll be an expert in no time. Remember, you can never have to much spawn, materials are cheap as shit (haha substrate) when you include Liquid Culture (also easy as shitiing, with all the great info here on shroom-ery).

Personally, I consdier the soak mandatory. If you simmer without soaking first, you'll get burst kernels, and you DON'T want burst kernels. Let the rye soak for 24 to 36 hours. This will hydrate it and also soften it so when you simmer(boil) for five minutes it will be at the perfect moisture content with no burst kernels. I soak in weak coffee, so add a small amount of hydrated lime for ph balance. You also want to add a pinch of gypsum per jar. RR

I haven't soaked in ages, and find that a 40 minute simmer gives perfect moisture content for rye/wbs. The endospore hatching thing is overplayed IMO, I don't get it.
