White Dust

This isn't a contam question (or is it?), so I figured it would go best in this forum. Correct me if I'm wrong...
Anyway, what the heck is all this white dust clogging my Cool Mist filter?

Couldn't be that. I work with dry perlite maybe once every two months, and in another room. This stuff is all the time - I clean it out of my filter every week!

its mineral buildup because of your water... happens in lots of humidifiers.  guessing you fill it with tap water?  perhaps you have "hard water" in your house.  some vinegar will take care of it... soak the filter and coolmist resivoir in a 25% or so vinegar solution, run it for a few minutes with the solution (obviously not connected to your FC) and then dump the rest out and wipe things clean and rinse.  if its really messy you can use a stronger vinegar solution.  you can follow that with a similar method using diluted bleach (more like 10%) to kill any bacteria/mold buildup.

i bet a vinegar cleaning is already called for somewhere in the humi's instruction manual if you look in there for more specifics.  they also make humidifier cleaning solutions but are expensive and probably are just vinegar/bleach solutions premixed for you.

If it's the wick type humidifier with a wick/filter in the water, I'd suggest getting rid of it or putting it in another room. Those things are bacteria factories.

One with an impeller such as the Vicks.

Is there a big filter that sits in the water with a big fan that blows out (the bad kind), or a spinny disk thing inside your humidifier with a small hole in which humid air comes out (very humid, you can put your face over it and feel the fine mist hit your face) [this is the good kind].

I'm not sure that's correct. I'm using an impeller type humidifier, and the filter is for the air intake - not the water. I mostly use distilled water (+ H2O2) in it anyway. It seems to me this must be something floating in the air.

Creamcorn is right. Ultrasonics produce the white dust. It's minerals from the water.
