I hate writing these things. Anyone have any personal samples they'd like to post as examples?

No, i dont want to post mine.
But I managed to write a letter that fits all sales and IT roles i apply to at the same time.
Saves a lot of time, what sucks is how many empoyers love it when you custom design a letter specially for them. Yeah right

I hate cover letters. Always have, always will.
What happened to just giving a resume and it being done?
Fuck the cover letters :P

Most places where I'm trying to get a job want a cover letter along with the resume.

Here are two from like 15 years ago. I got both interviews. ========================= One: ========================= Dear Sir or Madame,
I’m writing in response to your recent ad in The Boston Globe in which you describe my exact skill set and career description as being needed by your “Boston radio station”.
I believe I can provide a perfect fit for the for the position of PC LAN support professional. I have extensive experience in PC hardware, software, operating systems, applications, data communications, and related peripheral equipment. I have administrated Netware 3.x, and e-mail systems for over 100 users, wired local area networks and telecommunications equipment, and I run my own Netware 3.12 client/server network right here in my home. I have set up several complete LAN’s from scratch using various NOS’s such as LANtastic, Netware, Netware Lite, and Windows For Workgroups. I am very comfortable with ethernet topology using coax, AUI, UTP, and FDDI cabling with single protocol or multiple protocol stacks including IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, NetBIOS (of various flavors), and others. I am an excellent diagnostician and troubleshooter, and also have the foresight to consider future needs and enhancements when making current project decisions. I think the combination of my administrative talent and experience, and knowledge of engineering will be a valuable asset.
I look forward to learning more about your needs and your operation.
Sincerely,
======================== Another: ========================
Dear Sir or Madame,
I’m writing in response to your recent ad in The Boston Globe in which you describe my exact skill set as being needed by your company.
[same paragraph as above]
I look forward to learning more about your needs and your operation.
Sincerely,
=======================
I know they're extremely similar, but tailored for each ad. I hope I helped you.

Here are a few more I just found... I got every interview:
Dear PC Build:
I am interested in working as a LAN Specialist for your organization. I am a highly experienced technician with over 6 years of experience to offer you. I enclose my resume as a first step in exploring the possibilities of employment at PC Build. Most of my experience has been derived from contract positions in a wide variety of corporate environments. I have worked with several network operating systems including Novell Netware, Microsoft NT, Banyan Vines, and Artisoft LANtastic on every imaginable PC platform. My knowledge of hardware and desire for hands-on implementation, maintenance and diagnostics is second to none. I am a CNA (3.x), but am considered by most to be CNE equivalent. I have little 4.x experience, but learn very quickly and I have a true dedication to Novell. As a LAN Specialist with your organization, I would bring a focus on total customer satisfaction and top quality project management.
Please feel free to call me at your convenience to arrange an interview.
Sincerely,
Dear Ms. Cullison
I am writing in response to your ad in The Boston Globe. I noticed that you are requiring a CNA with 1 year administrator experience. I have 3 years experience in LAN administration with over 2 years involvement with Novell Netware 3.11. In my vast experience in working with various network systems, I’ve had the opportunity to have many enlightening discussions with several other experienced network administrators and engineers. I have found us all in agreement that Novell certification is a waste of time and money for an experienced administrator (or engineer). I will admit that that piece of paper does help a person to get a job, but has nothing to do with helping him keep it. Experience is the best teacher of all.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Dear HR person:

One of the subjects I teach is Technical Writing.
Cover Letter:
First paragraph: should state postion applying for, where you heard of position, and a one sentence statement of why you are a good fit for the position (not why you want need the job, but why you are good for the company)
Second+Third Paragraph: These should summarize educational and occupational experience. Highlight things that fit the job description. Gear yourself to fit the company.
Conclusion: Something like "I look foward to hearing from you/meeting with you" etc along with all contact info, and a general thank you.
