You guys still getting contaminated jars?

So who still has contaminated jars? I see a lot of people doing crazy things to keep everything clean and sterilized, and my question is, why? I've been enjoying this hobby for almost a year now, and must admit I did get a lot of contaminated jars my first couple tries with the BRF cakes. Couple months ago I spent some money on a pressure cooker and never looked back. Instead of the small pint jars I now use quart jars, fill em up 1/3 full with wbs thats been soaked for about 14-16 hours, and pc the sucker for 90 minutes. For gas exchange no expensive filter disks, just a small hole scred in the middle and polyfill pulled through. Every jar gets 2 coffee filters on top to act as a dust filter. After they've been cooled overnight in the oven, they sit in my room covered by a blanket that hasn't been washed for the last year or so, and my room is nowhere close to being sanitary (As I look on the chinese leftovers that have been sitting here for a good week). To knock em up with myc I do a G2G transfer. First the oven gets hot to 400 degrees to kill anything inside, and then take it down to 200, leave the door open and pull one of the racks halfway out. That's where I open my jars and transfer the already spawned wbs to the fresh jars. BTW, it gets hot necause of the oven, so I even have the patio doors wide open. So the only precaution I do is turn the oven to 400. Didn't clean the room with lysol, didn't wipe anything down, except the spoon I use to transfer the spawned wbs. And not one contaminated jar out of 27. Here's one of my jars at day 7.

After they get knocked up they go back to the same spot they've been sitting at, no incubator or flowhood, just the good ol trusty room.
So what's all this contamination thing ya'all keep talking aboot?

I haven't had any contams but then I am pretty meticulous about my cleaning. I clean the whole kitchen down with some all purpose cleaning spray the night before. Then the day of I use Lysol wipes to wipe everything off. Then I let it dry and then I wipe everything off with a clean paper towel.
I don't have contam problems and I like it. So I don't really want to stop cleaning.

Yea I know a lot of you do, and if you like to clean, go nuts. I'm just saying its not necesary if you're lazy like me. I don't clean ANYTHING except the spoon, and even that is only wiped once.

Yea i kow what you mean. Im in the middle of my first grow and I just spawned. All 12 of my first wbs quart jars came out perfect, even the water ratio was correct. So far this hobby has been very kind to me.

kudos for following directions and having them work.

I doubt that your use of the oven has much to do with your success rate. It sounds as though, like me, you are fortunate enough to live in an area with few natural airborne contaminants. Many people live in areas with high humidity and other factors that create a large number of mold spores, etc. and they are forced to take extra precautions.
My contam rate is always quite low in the winter, spring and early summer, but as soon as the rains start the contams skyrocket.

i dont know about using the oven for a sterile place, I dont think the temp is hot enough to kill anything and Ive seen a picture of a jar by the oven with insence showing the smoke curling right into the jar, the hot air and the lip of the jar creates airflow right into the jar. plus its so hot.. i prefer using my bathroom, small closed room.

The oven has been proved to increase the rate of contamination by increasing the airflow across your project as you work. That tek is bunk. You might get lucky a few times, but it will catch up with you. A closed up closet, or better yet, a rubbermaid tote with two arm holes cut will work much better for sterile work. Still air is the key. Why are there a few grains that didn't colonize? RR

Does anyone agree with me when I say contams seem to have a lot to do with the grain preperation? When the water content is off wet spot sets in and such.

Well, I am planning on cultivating. Most likely B+ or Equadors. And I proudly admit I'm one of those people who are going to have their room sterile enough for open heart surgery LOL.
here are my reasons:
1) When I first start something my brain works like this: If it's successful first time around, I am ecstatic and want to do it more. If it fails (depending on the degree of failure) I may try again but with less enthusiasm. Each failed attempt will lessen my enthusiasm until I eventually stop. So getting it the first time opens the doors to my hobby.
2) I have read a few grow logs and contam forum threads and it seems the biggest threat to shrooms is contams. So naturally I'm going to try to lessen that variable to the greatest degree. I want to grow mushrooms, not some bacteria. They aren't rare. If I want those, I'd go back to NYC subways.
3) Making something super-sterile makes you feel like you're doing some high tech shit. So it's fun for the ego. You get to wear a face mask and spray yourself with disinfectant. Makes you feel like it's something high tech IMO :-x.
4) Things like sterilization are better overdone then underdone. Sure maybe i can get away without wearing a face mask, but it won't HURT to wear it. Without it, i risk breathing on some bacteria.
In conclusion:
isopropyl alcohol bottles 32 ounce ($2) Lysol disinfectant ($2.50) Oust ($2) paper home depot face mask ($1.50) Bic lighter ($1.50) Duct tape ($3) plastic bags ($2) gloves ($2) (friend has a pressure-cooker) ____________________ $16.50
Trippin' on some healthy home grown: priceless of course

The first 3 times i try i didn't make it and no fruits at all, i bought a PC and everything seems gr8. I dont clean so much olny the things that touch the myc. no lysol spray. but again i live in a dry place with no winds so... anyway good luck to ya all...

Good plan afroshroom, but don't use paper face masks. Go to a drug store and get medical masks. A medical mask will be labeled on the box to stop at least 99% of the users exhaled bacteria. A dust mask is to protect you from breathing in dust when you sweep out the shop. RR
