Aqueous ionic redox reactions...
    #5630911 - 05/15/06 12:36 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I hate 'em... but they're up to 25% of my chem final grade.

Wow. It's been awhile since I have even thought about that type of shit. Those days were fun and definitely a learning experience, but I like life after college so much more. If I had only not gotten that felony marijuana charge, I would be making some major bucks with my now useless degree.

i'd take redox reactions over kinetics.

basic redox is easy, but ionic aqueous is a pain in the ass, especially the basic/acidic ones.

It's like you have to forget a lot of chemistry rules and just do chemical algebra. It's also tedious, since it's basically book-keeping.

H2O + SbO+ + ClO- => Sb + ClO2- + H+

That, for example. In order to get credit for that, I have to do a few things.

1. Show the oxidation number of each element, as a reactant and as a product.
2. Write the half-reactions for the oxidizer and reducer, mass-balance, and then combine them.
3. Reduce and give the final balanced equation.

It's not too terribly hard once you memorize the steps, but it's so much work to get through the whole thing!

Aqueous ionic redox reactions are easy. Wait till quantum mechanics/theory, hybridization, molecular orbital theory, thermodynaics and even gas laws. That when it starts to get tricky =\

A lot of that sounds like something I won't be learning for a while... but gas laws weren't all that bad. Of course, I cheated a bit... I programmed my Ti-84+ to remember the equations for me.

Memorization can be a real bitch, especially when you try to memorize something that's just pure math.

you programed PV=nRT?

naw, I actually programmed in each separate gas law as well as the combined gas law.

I could have just memorized the combined gas law and then converted it to the proper law to suit each problem... but it saved me time to just have a reminder of each specialized law on hand.

See, my college wont allow anything other than a basic calculator on test... so that's not a possiblity.. Granted PV = nRT is engraved in my brain forever.

I've gotten sort of nervous when my chem professor hovered next to me for a while during exams, but he's never seemed to mind my use of the calculator. perhaps he didn't notice, or perhaps he did and doesn't feel it's cheating.

I had to know what I was doing to make the programs, after all. I was just doing my work by proxy of a machine.

difference is that by using the machine you didnt have to memorize your methods...  cheater!!

Gas laws are easy as hell, quantum mechanics can be alright if you try, hybridization and thermodynamics fucking blow. The worst IMO is kinetics, I hate kinetics. My favorite are titration curves.

Why would you need to memorize the methods?

I did memorize a lot, but can't apply much without a book. Only the most basic things are in my active memory.

so i'm in my third quarter of general chemistry, and the problems i had was on thermodynamics, hybridization, and then kinetics.. i got through kinetics... oh, and calculating K values at first, cause i wasnt there the first day of that, and it was really whack. the Ksp values are kickin my ass right now cause the stupid common ion effect.

my teacher is pretty cool, he will accept work all through the quarter. i still have a postlab from the beginning of this quarter, and i'll probably turn it in the day of the final...
