Jars flooding using same process as i have for years
    #5629514 - 05/14/06 06:32 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I've been using the same process for the last year and a half or so, and now all the sudden when i pressure cook my pf jars, all of them flood.

I use the same jars, with the same lids as before, and fallow the same procedure.

My proceedure is as fallows
1. Fill jars and wipe the very top, add dry verm
2. Place tyvek over tops, twist on top
3. Cover holes in lids with duct tape
4. Cover jars with 3 layers of al. foil going from first the bottom to top, then top to bottom, and finally bottom to top again.
5. Place towel in pressure cooker to lift the jars off the bottom.
6. Add h20 to about an inch and a half or so up.
7. Heat to hot slowly, and then leave at the lowest setting once its hot enough to boil water tossed on top off on contact.
8. let pressure cook for 35 minutes.

I have been doing this for a long time, and never had much problem with jars flooding. But out of nowhere now i am getting runs with 9/10 jars flooded, if not all of them. My grain jars also do the same thing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

eh, no need to put 3 layers of foil on there man. and you might think about using silicon to cover those holes instead of duct tape. other than that i'm not sure what could be causing that.

Inch and a half is too much. I use an inch maybe a LITTLE less and I always have water left over even after an hour.

Your doing too much work, tyvek and duct tape are unnecessary but I did use a shitload of foil and rubberbands.

For PF cakes, I've made probably 40 in my life without tyvek.

Whats the point of dry verm if ur using tyvek?

Exactly! I would just reword that myself, why use tyvek when using a protective verm layer? Water level is high unless your boiling/steaming your jars.
