Air exchange question
    #5629125 - 05/14/06 04:40 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

For the past week i've my cakes have been in the terranium 3 times a day I would just open the lid a little bit and just leave it like that for 5 mins to exchange air. Is this enough to air out all the co2? I just wanna make sure i'm doing it right so my soon to grow mushrooms will be fine.

no. you need to fan them, and lightly mist after fanning

How long do I need to fan them for?

I say mist first
fan second.

the co2 sinks to the bottom. you have to force it up and out.

mist, fan. fanning after helps not allow the drops to pool on the mycelium.

do the dunk and roll if you haven't yet.

you don't have to fan long, just often

frequent air exchange.

remember, you are forcing the co2 up and out from the bottom so don't be shy.

Can you explain what the "dunk and roll" is?

also if i'm using perlite do I still need to mist?

dunk your cake:

put it back in the jar (clean)
fill with distilled water
put on a new lid (use a plastic one, they're easy and dont rust)
put in the fridge for about 24 hours
drain water and take cake out
set plastic lid down upside down
roll cake in dry vermiculite
fill plastic lid 3/4 full of moist vermiculite
make bowl shape out of moist vermiculite in lid
place cake on lid
sprinkle dry vermiculite on top of the cake
place in fruiting chamber

the vermiculite will deliver moisture to the cake without misting.

repeat this process after every flush.
starting second dunk, add 5-10% peroxide to the water in the jar.

shouldn't need to mist with dunk and roll and perlite.

maybe though....I don't grow off of cakes.

I usually dunk after the first flush, but I don't put it in the fridge. Cubies don't benefit from cold shocking. It doesn't hurt but why not leave them at room temps.

Instead of rolling it in verm I just DEC (Double End Case). This is accomplished by making a foil "plate" by rolling up the edges of a piece of foil a little larger than the cake and putting a half an inch of verm on it. Moisten it with water and place your cake firmly on top of the moistened verm. Then sprinkle as much verm on the top of the cake as it will hold and moisten it to saturation.

Fan and mist as usual. I only mist a perlite environment when the humidity gets low or the verm on the cakes seem a little dry. Otherwise I just take a syringe full of water and moisten the verm on top and bottom of the cake.

Just going to reiterate that dunking after your substrate run will increase yields substantially for your first flush don't short change yourselves guys! Cakes shrink during the substrate run especially with the PFTek.

You need to dunk in the refrigerator to avoid bacterial contamination during the dunk. Rice, grains or even manure under water at room temp will grow bacteria in a matter of hours.

CO2 is vastly overrated. We fan to provide fresh air for the mycelium, and to get rid of stale air which favors molds. By the time the mycelium gets to the fruiting stage, CO2 output is very low. There is also heat generated by the substrate which creates air currents that swirl the CO2/air around in the box. It won't be all CO2 on the bottom.

If you have enough perlite for humidity, you can leave the lid cracked a bit all the time for continuous air exchange during fruiting and forget all about fanning, or at least cut back to once per day.
