Sunday's Hunt Results

No actives but it was a good day as for finding cool things to photograph. I would like some comments on the mushrooms that we found. I have hunted the same patch of woods for a solid year now and I have seen over 30 different strains of mushroom's.. Well today that total went up to 32. Here are two new fungi that I have not had the pleasure to photograph. The brain looking fungi was growing inside rotten root balls of hard wood trees. The second Orange/Yellow Mushroom was growing from the soil and looked to be emerging from a white egg. They age and just fall apart! This string of pic's shows them in varying stages of life so you can see how they self destruct. I know they are not a Gym.. But the smell was close to that of a Big Laughing Gym Spec.. We did find a few Gyms but they were on there last legs and were not worth picking.. Peace! And thanks in advance for your comments!

The mushroom in the second pic is Jimius hendrixii. It will make your head spin.

Actually, based on the volva and the presence of a ring, it could be some weird Amanita species. I guess that Volvariella is a possibility too.
That brain looking fungus is really cool looking. I have no idea what it is.
As always, awesome pics and thanx

Your brain looking fungus is a Sparassis (probably S. spathulata), the Cauliflower Mushroom. They are edible and rated choice.
The other one (the orange/yellow one) is an Amanita, although I won't even attempt a guess at subgenus much less species. It should be treated as if it is poisonous, potentially deadly.
Great photos, BTW.
Happy mushrooming!

Um yes, I concur with TM's ID's. Definitely Spatulata (that was found under a conifer of some kind, eh?) and as for the Aminita, I would indubitably state that it is banningiana.
In fact I would go so far as to wager your life on it!
Indubitably!

and just to make it perfectly clear...
I meant no disrespect to anyone with those comments. Yessup knows 100 times more than me about mushrooms and it was an inside joke that I made with my comments.
I started looking up recipes for TM's ID of the Spathulata and just happened across the Aminita ID. I guess you'd have to know me and how much I actually know about IDing Mushrooms to know that my seeming confidence in those statements is just ridiculous.
Thanks for the trip dude and next time I'll fry you up one of those Brains!!!

I found a Cauliflower Mushroom once. Cooked in butter it reminded me of crispy chicken skin. A very delicious appetizer for camp food.
