My Grandfather was a Mason
    #5627846 - 05/14/06 09:59 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

As my parents were packing up recently to move, I found a bunch of my Grandfather's old things. Mostly photo albums and nick-nacks, like an unopened deck of cards from a convention with Spiro Agnew, VP to Nixon.

But, more interestingly, I saw his grave marker/dedication plaque that had a square & compass between his dates.

And I also found this mysterious medal in a small box... After a bunch of searching online using the shape and what I could make out of the text on it, I've figured out this is a Masonic medal given by the local chapter, probably for induction. I don't know much else... but, take a look!
Interesting, no?
Any further help is greatly appreciated! Freemasonry is very much a mysterious thing in general. And I had no idea my grandfather was a Mason...

It's certainly not illegal to discuss it.

Mine was too.  Interesting story....

He had been dead for a couple of years and my cousin and her husband moved into his house that he had built.

One night, very late, there was a knock on the door.  When the husband opened the door there was an old man standing there.  Apparently his car had died or wrecked or somethin and he went off walking to look for help.  He walked by their house, that my gpa built, and said a Mason had lived there.  Something in the architecture or design of the building was something only Masons knew.  So they chatted for a lil while and my cousin's husband gave him a lift.

The man never told what it was that gave it away but that story intrigued me.  Ive spent countless hours online looking for what it might have been to no avail.

What side?
Well my Grandfather was not an evil man, and I can't expect every Mason to be.
Most disinfo you have read about Freemasons is blown heavily out of proportion, only typically to be focused on the 32nd degree Masons and the elite ruling class.
He was not in that Echelon.

whatever goob.

very interesting story Lloyd... it's fitting; masons are obviously known for their incorporation of symbology into their work.

Maybe the lodge could tell me a little more about the medal. Probably wouldn't say much about him though.

maybe I'm mistaken, but are Mason Temples not religous structures and of the same association of freemasonry?

Scientology is of the same vintage, it started as a scam and a fun way for elites to posh around and waste money- and then it really started picking up and is now worth billions and has potentially dangerous influence.

yeah well its the same thing though, an organization with money that can influence change through membership and with their own interests in mind, all one would have to do is climb their ranks and fulfull their own. Think about it, theres a reason secret societies are banned

connecting the masons with scientology is way way off base; the masons have done a lot lot lot to help the advancement of science, reason, and humanism over the years. we are all better off for the masons having been around...

Ha the masons are a joke. If you read their history it was just some club that went insane. All the masons around me are old middle class retired men with no power of any kind. Its like a moose lodge at this point.

In some ways the Masons seem to operate like LCN.. Those friendly, seemingly innocent old men are the most dangerous.

My grandfather is a Mason. He's pretty high up...I was rummaging through his shit one day and found a masonic gavel with his title engraved into it...something along the lines of "Grand Exalted Leader". He also had what looked like an apron and some ridiculous, square-shaped hat.

Basically, the Masons are a fraternity with extra emphasis on networking. Some of the members do have clout/influence in their "day jobs", and if someone needs something from another member they will rarely be denied. My grandfather used to be Mayor of a pretty big city and people would often call on him for favors. His job helped him ascend the masonic ranks pretty quickly I think.

I've been to Masonic parties before. No paddling, no blindfolded gimps, just by in large a group of nice, respectable old men. The average age is probably about 60, although I remember a few, VERY wierd guys in their mid 20's who were members.

There is a great deal of charity work done. Fundraising and volunteering are extremely popular. Freemasons who want to focus entirely on volunteering usually become Shriners (the guys with the cone-shaped hats).

As to what happens when you reach the 33rd degree or whatever, I have no idea.
