Preparing large amounts of casing
    #5626827 - 05/13/06 11:06 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I am currently in the process of doing a grow involving 8 casings in 16qt rubbermaid-style containers. Each being 2 quarts of WBS spawned to hpoo. Previously I have done much smaller grows than this. Because of the smaller size of my grows, my casing prepartion has been more guesswork.

I was wondering if anybody had any tips on producing larger ammounts of casing material. More specifically, if I am creating a vermiculite and coir casing layer, how much do you think I will need of each? Do you think one brick of coir will be enough?

Any help is appreciated. I don't want to be short on casing material when it comes time, but I don't want to go overboard either.

I don't suggest much coir in casings. Too many nutrients in it.

I suggest 45%verm, 45%peat, and 10%coir.

Than adjust ph with crushed oyster shells or powder.
I set my ph at 7.5

mix super well in a large round tub. Mixing to field capacity.

load into fp bags and sterilize in the pressure cooker.

One brick would be two much I think.

Best way is to make some, and then find out how much more...and so on.

You could try math; measure the length width and the height (casing layer like 3/4 - 1 inch for the height)...LxWxH = x then convert that number in to cups,

I usually have my casing layer be 1/4 of the depth of the substrate and never going deeper than 1 inch.

Having pre-sterilized casing in fp bags or jars sitting around allows for quantity control and convenience

preparing large amount of casing material and keeping it in jars/fp bags does seem to be the simple solution, huh?

Persional i find that 50/50+ works great for me, for bulk I follow the steps in a CLEAN wheel barrow. Then I put into a pillow case, then tie it off and place in my PC 45 min @ 15 psi. I just make sure everything is loose and what not and there is space at the top.

Then i take it into my clean room with gloves on I place into pre cleaned ziplock bag's and store what ever is left for firther use

Let me know if I am doing something wrong, so far it has worked great

pillow case in a pressure cooker may be no good.

once your casing is in the pressure cooker is has a delicate balance of moisture and ph.

by allowing it to be exposed in the pc you are loosing all of that.

the water/steam can wash away some of your buffering agents, mess up the ph, and foil your perfect water content.

use fp bags or jars.

no wheel barrow needed and no chance of ziploc failure.
plus perfect ph and water content every time. No guessing.

Yes, this is true. I used to PC qurt jars with pre mixed 50/50+ and then  put the lid upside down to prevent vacume lock so i can use it for caseing layer or patching.

I think this will sit well with others, onl reason i did the pillow case in PC was i was sick of dead space from jars

Casing mix should NOT be pc'd.

good call RR.

most experienced people I know tell me to pasteurize casing, not sterilize it.

sterilized (pc'd) casing is far more susceptible to contams.

this is what you mean, correct?

pasteurizing will leave behind certain bacterias that will help guard the casing from unwanted contams but still allow the mycelium to do its thing

From what I understand, casing material should be pastuerized. No reason it can't be stored in sterile jars though.

I've sterilized as well as pasturized with very similar results both ways I now pasturize because of it's ease and it makes better mycosense to me thats all.

how do you pasteurize casing material with a PC? i have a rocker style PC... do i just leave the rocker off so that it doesn't build up pressure and if so how long???

Well I do use a lotta coir and have had much success with it. For my casing I do 60/40 of verm/coir and add 10% crushed oyster shells and a pinch of blood meal. Mix it up, OVERSATURATE, load into a couple turkey sized tinfoil pans, cover with foil and bake at 200 for 2 hours. Because of the water evaporation the moisture level is perfect by the time they're done.

I starting sterilizing mine 2 months ago and have had my best results to date .

I use the 50/50+ . I make up 30 quarts worth at a time and PC it in the quart jars just like I was canning it . Rubber seal down . Seals and stays good for months

I haven't had any mean green in quite awhile . Usually my casings just run out of nutes and I toss them after the fourth or fifth flush

For your question on how much you'll need . I use 16 quart sweater boxes for my casings and it takes 1 1/2 quarts of casing mix to get a layer 3/8" deep .

Good Luck

agar(i think?) said to sterilize casing mix (50/50+) then put it outside for a few days (in a mostly sealed spawn bag) to let beneficial bacteria/microbes back in.

is this wishful thinking/waste of time or is he on to something?

Maybe if you had a 5.0+ CBI micro wave

Micro waves are great for small amounts, but I don't know about you, my PC is bigger than my microwave
