Pan Subb ID Confirm Please (pics+sporeprint)
    #5625306 - 05/13/06 05:30 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I found these mushrooms, which I believe(d) to be Pan Subbs, on the edge of a cow field in what I'm almost positive was cow shit (as opposed to horse shit). These things drop a jet black spore print, as you can see below. The stems are thin and copper brown. The gills were a medium gray when picked, and turned to the charcoal hue seen in the pic. Most of the shrooms are umbonate, though this was harder to distinguish on some of the darker capped and or younger specimens. I'd say the smell was pretty indistinct/regular shroomy smell.  Anyway guys, I really appreciate any input; I have little experience with hunting, so I don't want to ingest anything before I'm damn sure it's not going to put my ass on a liver transplant waiting list.

EDIT: I also found what I believe to be a young cube. There were only two or three of these things in this one clump shit surrounded by tall grass, so I picked the biggest one. This was the very first shroom I found on the hunt and I got really fired up about finding more cubes, but the whole night I only found that one clump with mushies like this . From the side the stem only seemed to blue slightly, but looking at the cutoff stem from the top there was a very definite bluing. I also sporeprinted this one and it came out darkish purple/chocalety. Anyway, here are relatively crappy pics I got of that one.

Panaeolus papilionaceus complex and not subbalteatus.

Bad luck mate, close though. At least you know you're looking in the right places.

Subbs will typically be more rugged, they are actually pretty beefy compared to the other stuff you usually find in the same areas.

I find them lil bastards all over the cow shit here in Texas.
They drop that black spoor and get ya all excited ..
I have found a few sub species that have a twist to the stem and I do believe them to be active to and extent.
But the active levels in them would be way way low...
Good Pic's keep em coming!
