DE is fine as far as I know. I am gonna start adding it to my casing. DE does work a little when wet but not much.

I use it in every casing, and also mixed in with manure for the substrate. I first got the idea from Agar, so he gets the credit. You can probably find his post on DE by doing a search. I don't use it for gnat control, but rather for its water holding capaicity. You can get some monsters with DE in the substrate and casing.

yea, and where can i buy DE?

i have done research on it, but have not seen it readily available in any place i've looked...  yes the infestation is real bad.

Actually my digicam can take 15 sec clips. Maybee i can show you a short clip of them crawling across the surface... They are crazy!

i move my casings between greenhouses so that the population lessens, but at the rate they reproduce i am loosing the battle.

Sad thing is that i have alot of casings going in soon, and i know the more there is the more there is going to be.

I need some DE

Well there is a thread agar posted. youll have to dig but its a 50 pound bag for 20$ but it comes from CA so expect some shipping. Why dont you stop growing for a little bit and get things under control. foam around your windows and get a bug zapper or something?

Bug zappers are useless for fungus gnats. I got a bag of DE at Lowes hardware the other day. The local one here has it in stock. Any garden center should have it. All the organic gardeners use it for insect control.

But is it food grade like AGAR says you need to have? Agar has a bug zapper in his grow room that comes on during the dark cycle. Thats when they wanna lay there eggs. I guess his has some kind of vacuum on it or something so it sucks them in. i dunno.
again what ratios are we talking about with sub and casing?

ok so me and my roommate went crazy on the greenhouses...

took everything apart, and too it outside to get hosed down. cleaned the whole room, hung new flystrips and put it all back then went on a trip (vacation).

came back 3 days later and not a single gnat on the strips. I think we may have gotten rid of em!

will keep posted... but washing them down with the hose worked pretty good...  YES!

yeah i don't think the DE would have worked with a infestation like that. if i were you i would bomb the house too. maybe you could use the DE now and it would help from getting them back.

good luck keep ur grow area clean

Hey RR, I've used DE for insect control before but only recently read about it for cultivation. Does DE effect PH? Like oyster shell in a casing?

Man, with that type of infestation Oatman, it might be a good time to get what you can out of the projects and dump them. Wait for a week or so until the remaining gnats left behind die off before casing anymore projects.

I had a similar problem as well. Not quite that bad, but pretty bad. Finally I had to dump the trays, clean everything out well and waited for a new spawn run to complete. This was around a 10-14 day period that allowed me to kill off the remaining gnats, or for them to die off. It worked, but now that the summer's here, you still have to keep an eye out for them. I recently pruchased a Venus Fly Trap from Wal-Fucking-Mart for $5 that sits in the same room as my projects do. I guess it's working out so far. I haven't seen any in the room as of yet.

i have them down to a minimum... it's not just me that has "projects" i have a roommate too...

together we have about 4 greenhouses. but after each spent greenhouse full, we take them outside and spray em off with a hose...

the gnats pretty much stay inside the greenhouse while fruiting. so i don't usually see any untill 3-4th flush.

i have it under controll and to a minimum, but still pesky bastards get everywhere
