Living with Gnats...
#5625063 - 05/13/06 03:39 PM (17 years, 8 months ago) |

So i got gnats.... i've had gnats for over a year now.
Strange: i've had the gnats longer than i've had my girlfriend. Maybee it's destiny.
so i go about my daily bussiness, and it's not common that you will encounter a gnat in every room of the house. (even upstairs??!?)
so i guess you can say i've been living with em for a while now and i am getting used to it. Lately, it's gettin real bad i try and suck as many as i can with a vaccume, but that doesn't do it. Every time i go to the grocery store they are out of fly strips.
just thought i would share this so others can post their experiences with gnats, and possibly how ya got rid of em???
They reproduce quicker than anything i have ever seen before...

I had a problem with them, not for growing. But I have a large cage for my Greenwing Macaw, and he goes through a lot of fruits. Anyway what I did was set a glass of red win next to the cage, and which I cleaned daily. Well they fall in and drowned...bastards

They breed in the soil of houseplants. Find out which one, and apply BT to it. They make a special BT just for fungus gnats. Do an internet search for "BT fungus gnats" and I'm sure you'll get plenty of hits. RR

I have lots of house plants... but none are real
they are only living in my greenhouse, so i had to shop around because my store was out of fly paper. i got this!!

This was after 1 day! They LOVE IT

SUCKERS!!!
Oh yea, it says that they are attracted to it more, when there are more gnats on it!! that's great! i am getting one for every shelf in every greenhouse i have. Wahoo!

dealing with infestation is more about prevention then extermination! maybe you should consider taking a few days off with the grow to clean everything up, fix holes and what not... and then start fresh?
install some screens over the whole house maybe?
do a little reading about the gnats and figure out the best way to prevent future infestations (that's really the only way! you can keep trying to kill them forever... those traps can help reduce the numbers but it won't fix the problame!)

Your right... i have 3 greenhouses. I am switching between them, but they are not sealed. i am thinking of bombing my whole growroom, but at this time i will not.
i will get these little bastards... I thought i got rid of em all, but when i started back up operation...

The sticky pole will get them. Gnats have a short life span. Don't bomb your grow areas, it will do no good if they're coming in from outside and it's not practical to seal everything off with the massive amounts of air exchange we use.
On the positive side, they don't eat much and rarely result in contamination. RR

I had a problem with some type of gnats I think, I don't know. All I know is there were gnat size bugs living in a large bulk mono-tub I had, and I started seeing maggots in my grow. I just killed the bugs when I seen them, and removed the maggots with tweezers. The more colonized the poo got, the less maggots I would find.
By the time it fully colonized, I seen no maggots, and had no contams result from them. The fruits weren't infested either.

Electronic gnat zapper electrocutes the bastards. Portable Hepa sucks them into the prefilter material & kills them. Both items found at thrift stores under $10 each.

Are you sure your species of gnats are even attracted to light? In my opinion, bug zappers should be illegal. Used outdoors, 90% of the bugs they kill are beneficial insects that feed on mosquitoes, gnats, aphids, etc., and you'll rarely find a mosquito in one because they're attracted to CO2, and not light. Fungus gnats are attracted to mycelium. Personally, I'd stick with the flypaper. RR

interesting take. I will attest to growing up next to a neighbor that had a bug zapper.
It was ANNOYING (constant buzzzt buzzzzzing and it wasn't me!) and we still got eaten alive.

my light is on the outside of the greenhouse, none of the gnats are going on top toward the light, only toward the fly paper, and toward mycellium.
alot of em gone!

agar noted having it on a timer to come on during the dark cycle. that way when all is dark and they want to lay eggs they go towards the zapper is what I thought he was getting at

So now the thing is pretty full, and i got cheeper fly strips...
But look at this thing... Full as hell, and OMG!

There is Mycellium growing on them. Just like in stamets book Mycellium Running! The mycellium is colonizing the gnat. Good shit, but still a huge infestation, and gradually getting worse.

Wow, that's some serious gnats. Certainly worse than I've ever seen them. See if datomaceous earth will 86 them. It only works when totally dry, so you'll have to sprinkle down fresh whenever you mist. The plus side is DE is great mixed in with casing material. It holds a ton of water, way more than verm. You can sprinkle DE on all your shelves too. Put anywhere the gnats land, so they'll crawl across it and get cut to shreds. DE to a bug is like us crawling naked across a bed of broken glass. RR
