I've been raising dogs all my life... it seems like I always learn something new...with each pup I get.
Most of the dogs that I have raised...end up thinking they are humans. Cause they don't act like most dogs. Good example...Kitzu is huge and he will sit in a chair like a human. I talk to him...and he acts like he totally understands me.
RR came over and met Kitzu and said that he has my personality... I'll take that as a compliment.
They say...that a dog will take after it's owner. I believe this to be somewhat true.
Always treat a dog with love and kindness...never be mean or nasty with it. Never abuse a dog!~ Be firm and always show that you are the boss (Alpha) though. Dogs will try and dominate you...if you let them. Look at things from your dogs point of view.
I have had some wonderful dogs over the years. Tasha was 16 years old...and she was a fabulous animal. I miss her!~
They become one of the family!~

Liz said: Labs are people dogs. He will constantly want to be around you, even if you crate train him, and should only be confined to his crate if he needs a time out, or if you're not home. You just got him home what, 4 hours ago? I'd chill on the crate training for now, be glad that he likes you, and let him get acclimated to you as well as his new home. This is a big move for him, and probably very stressful. I don't think there's such thing as a dog being "too attached" to you. I'm pretty sure you said you were looking for a constant companion, and with a Lab, you'll certainly get that, whether you want it or not. Have some patience with the pup, get him used to sleeping in the crate at night, and he'll grow to like it as long as it's comfortable. Also, you might want to put his food and water bowls in there, so that he gets used to going in and out of it more. That's where Lucy's are.
Okay, cool. Thanks so much Liz, you really put things in perspective. I'll put his bowls in there.

I didn't see Liz's post...
and she makes some really good points.
I only put Kitzu in his crate when I had to leave him alone... and only for a few hours.
Night time he spent in that box with one of my old coat's...that you saw in that picture that I posted. Next to my bed. If you do something simular it would be good...because the coat has your smell on it...and that will be comforting to Shane.
After you house break him...and break any bad habbits that he might get. You should start leaving him out of the crate when you leave home. You have to start trusting him a little. I lost a few pillows...and the kids lost a few toys...due to chewing. But the dog will be much happier out of the crate.
Funny story real quick...
I would yell "Kennel up" and Kitzu would run into the "Large Crate" Kennel as fast as he could.
After I got rid of Kitzu's crate... I would mess with him...and say "Kennel up" and the damn dog would go over to get into his Kennel and it was gone. He would look at me and have this weird look on his face. Poor Kitzu...dad was messing with his head.

Great stuff! I've had several shared "family dogs", but this my first puppy of my very own. I'm totally smitten with him and it seems he is with me as well. I'm his dad, his mom, his playmate, his whole world. He's so content sleeping on me, it's really cool. It's gonna break his little heart when he gets locked in his crate for the night... He cries and whines and yelps... I hate that. I'll probably let him sleep on my bed.

that would be your first mistake.
the dog will grow up and you will have a full grown dog sleeping on your bed.
the coat in the box...really helps stop the crying, whinning and yelping they do at first. puppies miss their momma and the other pups...when you first get them. your smell on the coat will sooth them...if you spend alot of quality time with your pup they will get used to your smell.
and a new puppy requires alot of quality time spent with it.
think of a puppy as being like a human baby...they are real needy.

OMG, Are they ever! He won't leave me alone, follows me everywhere, except when I want him to. Like right now I'd really like to take a piss, but I can't let him out of my site 'cause he'll pee somewhere (caught him twice already). Last time I carried him into the bathroom and put him in the tub while I took a piss... He just whined and yelped 'cause he couldn't quite get out.
What a little baby! But I love him.
